Hi, Everybody!

WE NEED HELP!
Since we've migrated from Netware 3.11 to 4.11 Intranetware we've often
got DBFNTX/1010 and Dos Error 5 at random!.
We've checked Network connections. We've tried using Client32 from
Novell even the last version 3.1 and it didn't work. We've even changed
Win98 to Win95!
We've also tried increasing the Stack size like NG says, but it didn't
work!
We've read in this forum we could use Blinker 5.1 but we don't have it
and the 5 minutes of the demostration version is not enough!
As a desesperate way we returned to Netware 3.11 and the problems
dissapeared! Because the Y2K problem we cannot continue with NW 3.11

We are using Clipper 5.2e and Blinker 3.30 in both Real and Protected
mode with Windows Clients.

Any idea would help

I´m not 100% sure, but _if_ I recall it right this is a known
problem that can be fixed by using the most current version
of Blinker ( 5.x ).

Sounds like it could be the old Novell watchdog problem - ensure the
server is patched to at least SP4 (SP7 is the latest).

My environment is Netware 4.11, Microsoft Client for Netware (bindery),
Clipper 5.2e, Blinker 3.30 in real and protected mode, with 20 Win95/98
concurrent stations using the same data. I've never had such problems.
However, if you are using the Novell 32bit client, make sure that TRUE
COMMIT is set to ON and CACHE WRITES is set to OFF.

We are encountering the same error with our CA-Clipper 5.2
application. We use Blinker 3.2, SixCDX 2.0 and FUNCKy 2.x. Our
application was running on a Banyan Vines network and DOS/WFW
desktops for almost 10 years without problems for the most part.
Recently, we migrated to Windows 95a desktops and Windows NT Server.
The desktop migration happened a few weeks/months ago without
problems. However, this past week we moved the network files over to
NT and we are now getting many DOS Error 5 errors (read errors and
corruption detected errors). One of our sites has 300+ users.
Needless to say, this is creating many headaches. Some of our related
reporting applications that were written in Delphi 1 & 4 accessing the
same network files are not working properly as well (sometimes the
network drive is no longer accessible). We even have trouble copying
files from the network to the desktop. After some files are copied,
we suddenly get "drive F: does not exist". The DOS Error 5's happen
at random and more frequently to some users than others. The busier
the network, the more frequent the problem.

Obviously there is some kind of randome, unpredictable file access
problem. Someone I know has said that it is symptomatic of Windows 95
clients and Windows NT servers. Had we used Windows NT Workstations,
we may not have had these problems.

So far no luck in pinpointing the cause(s), altohugh we've tried
updated the VREDIR.VXD file as suggested in thge Microsoft
Knowledgebase. Anyone run have any ideas?

Thanks,

Joe.

Joe:

We think we have found a solution (15 days without problems), disabling
TurboFat feature of Netware 4.11 loading turbodis.nlm (you can find it
in Netware site). Nevertheless we are evaluating Advantage Database
Server.

As Regards to NT We've read in this forum that Fat management of NTFS
could be the problem (Like TurboFat in Novell), have you tried to
create a FAT16 partition in NT Server and put Clipper files on It?

Regards
and GOOD LUCK!

Before you buy.

Hi Joe - we experienced the same thing after our conversion to NT. What
you are seeing has been reported many times when running Clipper (or
any other DOS RDBMS)apps on Win95 connected to NT. Look into
Disabling "Opportunistic Locking" (OpLock) on the server. That will
help but the only way to totally "fix" the problem is to run in DOS
mode (connect to the server using the "net" commands).

Good Luck

We are considering it as we have few options/possible solutions
available at this time.

For Clipper running under win9x to NT servers, the following 3 things should
be strongly considered to ensure a more stable platform...

1 - Ensure Win95 workstations have latest redirectors
http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/search.aspD=Support&A=T&T=B&SG=&S=F&S
D=SO&T1=&FR=1&DU=C&Sz=vrdrupd2Eexe&O=Vrdrupd2Eexe

2 - Disable Opportunistic Locking
http://www.cardbox.co.uk/ntserver.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q219/0/22.ASP

3 - Link your apps with Blinker 5.1 to prevent DOS error 5 / 55
occurences...

hmmm that redirector link was screwy...

search Micro$oft's knowlege base for "Vrdrupd.exe"

( p.s. Phil B., the update they have is now 1 point newer than the one on
the Oasis... )

Cheers...

Turbofat.nlm fixes loads of problems - but try Advantage Database Server as
well
