These are just a few names. I sure that are plenty more. So if you
know anything about these or other persons that work on Clipper before
CA. Then lets play "WHERE ARE THEY NOW?"
> Rick Spence
As far as I know he's still giving training in the likes of Delphi. I
attended one of his tailored courses a while back (1998?), excellent stuff.

>> Where are we....
I'm still here but now besides Clipper, we do C++ and some Delphi. We do
some C++ training, convert Clipper software to windows directly for clients
and also subcontract for other developers.
BTW the Steve you're thinking of is most likley "Straley".
Also...I was never a Nantucket employee, but worked real close with those
guys during the alpha and beta programs. I was on the Clipper steering
committee after CA took over.

really? is there any news of him since? you know, is not the first;
those offices are vast, you know. i've heard in Brussels of a guy
visiting the CA quarters, while consulting the Cullinet crew, one
floor up; he was a strange fellow, you know. he tried to meet with
one of the developing members, but never got to see him. should
have left, but the thing is, once and a while he's been noticed
somewhere in the building; no one knows what he's doing there,
you know, or looking for. probably never found the exit. There's
rumours 'bout him digging up the Clipper archives, assembling
stuff for its bi-decade anniversary. weird story, you know ...
however, is an interesting thread; what about sharing
some things we know about individual members at
Nantucket. ravished to learn something about these
geniuses, really
as far as i know, Dennis Dias was a student at the
Brussels' university; anyone can confirm this?
and, Dave, do you have any mailaddress of Rick
Spence. i am a registered customer of his Visual
Interface Reference and of bit per second's VI.
i have a question about it i really would like to
have answered.

Hummm..... Just what is the meaning of this ?
Is it time to move on ?<g> Should I send the

David is fine. I speak to him on a weekly basis via phone
not to mention the numerous emails we exchange each week.
He has a number of projects that he is working on, including
a TCP/IP Version of Fortress Client Server for 32bit Clients
I've been using this version with Visual Objects now for about
two months and it seems to be Comix Rock Solid.
BTW, is this the same ray as I use to communicate with on
the Comix BBS ?

Last I heard about Steve Straley is, he was going into the group owning CAs
Jasmine product (Training side IIRC), that was ~2-3 years ago.

Heck no... I've been using you as an off site backup all these years! <GGG>

Expecting a followup within 10 mins is a bit much, usenet isn't real time
and, worst of all, sometimes there are distractions away from the keyboard.
Twelve or so hours is a good turnaround time on usenet. ;>
The company he was working for (owned?) was the Database Programmers
Retreat, now called WebTech <URL:http://www.webtechcorp.co.uk/>.
. o O ( Personally I preferred the original name, I wonder why the change? )
yep.... worked on the RDD stuff for awhile with a guy who's name ESCAPEs me
right now <G>
I remember a late night Clipper session many years ago with a good friend of
mine. We couldn't figure out something in Clipper. Since all the Clipper
support lines in Australia were closed, we decided to call London, ROFL.
Some fella named Craig Ogg answered the phone and clear things up very
quickly. He was a great help. I also remember seeing his name on certain
credits here and there.
and I seem to remember one that was a child actor that died???
geez has it been 20 years already...
That was Tom Rettig ( of Lassie fame )... a close friend, and a great guy.
Known to most for TR Lib.
Didn't Dennis Dias (Denny Dias) play some guitar for Steely Dan? Or was that
a different guy?

Yes, indeed.
Basil wrote the original version of UI for Wallsoft, IIRC. He's also
listed as a developer in the 5.2 credits list.

As I recall, it was Basil's bizarre sense of humor that led to some of
the lesser-known error messages in Clipper, like:
- Ford Maverick Error
- Something terrible has happened!
- Control level closure leaves gaping wound in control stack
My favorite was the one that read like a tabloid headline:
- Unresolved DO target symbol kills parse tree, self

Right now I'm Computer Services Manager for Wycliffe Associates,

Likewise, and it certainly has been a long time indeed!
Hello there,
I'm an old DBase / Clipper hand and I've been vigorously searching the
Internet for information relating to Brian Russell (Nantucket) and, more
particularly, his ten (or 12) Laws of Software Development.
I can clearly recall getting a nice bonus poster outlining said laws
with our new Clipper 5.0 shrinkwrapped box set (back when there were
boxes). I have been looking around from time to time to try to locate
these nuggets of wisdom as mentoring material for our newer recruits,
younger developers, etc.
I remember that one of them was something to the effect of "a software
project's mass increases proportionally to the amount of time remaining
before it's release."
Can anyone point me to either Brian himself, or perhaps someone actually
has the little poster and can briefly shoot me the details. Would be
much appreciated.
Long Live Clipper!

Last time I heard from Brian he was working out in SF. I may have an email
address for him on one of my laptops.... but by now, it may be out of date
<G>. For obvious reasons, Brian changes his email address a lot <G>.
Anyway, ref your dev laws.... I don't remember seeing the poster, but when
5.0 came out, we were already working on beta stuff for the "fixes" <G>. I
may still have an unopened Clipper 5 down in the basement.... next time I
venture down that way, I'll take a look.
Cheers,
Al
