Hello,
I don't really speek netherlands, but I was at the conference in
Nürnberg myself.
So we have seen VO 2.7 already. Seems to be classes faster than now.
The policy is - as already mentioned in this form - to build a stable
version in first aspect, not to add so much new features, and to
compile the code with C++ Version 7.
The code, we have now is C++ Version 5.
Brian said in Nürnberg, that he has got the code - and could start
working with it - not earlier than mid of June this year.
And detectet, that the old VO-Crew compiled the code with the switch:
warnings: No.
As he switched to ALL WARNINGS, he got about 4000.
Trying to compile it with C++ V 7 gave about 8000 Warnings.
His first aspect is now to get a clean code with no warnings at all in
V 7.
The timeframe he told us for the delivery of 2.7 would be about 6
month from now.
As a rumor I heard, the pricing for 2.7 will be for registered 2.6
users only the costs for shipping an so on, it was mentioned abt.
20-30 US$.
2.5 - Users must pay a lot more.
Well, it's not a translation, but a little report from Nürnberg.
Greetings from the misty baltic sea
Hanjo
The conference started at 4 november with a session of John Parker and Brian
Feldman telling about the deal with CA. Furthermore John Parker demonstrated
the 2.7 build of VO. Some random AEF's were picked from the audience and
they all compiled well. Even a subsystem DLL from Robert van der Hulst.
Brian got the VO code at the start of June. Brian thinks that in 4-6 months
the new 2.7 will ship. The costs for an upgrade from 2.6 will probably be
only the shipping costs. For 2.5 users, a normal upgrade fee will be asked.
He promised the German public that he would try to get Unicode support in
this new version (However this was not a 'hard' promise!). Furthermore a
new, clean, SDK will be supplied with this new version. Without all current
warnings in the VO 2.5b3 code.
John Marshall allmost finished the new CaVo site including on-line
bugtracking en registration. John Parker en Herntz Graham, ex CA support
employee, will provide (payed) english support on VO. For local support the
different country suppliers will be involved.. For Germany this is Dieter
Crispien and for the Netherlands this will be Ed Richard from CasWell IT.
At the end of the conference there was a Q&A session. The spirit was
positive during this Q&A. The way Brian was open to the audience about all
VO issues did give (especially the German audience) a positive feeling about
the current situation and future development.
Brian furthermore introduced the kernal development team (Brice de Ganahl,
Dave Keuchler en Don Caton) Brian also told the audience that he was talking
to CA about a school-licensing model for VO.
The next conference will be held in England (DevRealm) and a new date was
planned for the next DevCon in Germany next year. Furthermore a confrence
will be held in America (Probably LA) in Juli organised by Oscar Schneider.
This was basicly all that was written in the 2 topics of the SDGN.

Perhaps we shoulr at least wait until it's ready to ship, and then Brian
can decide how he wants to handle those details?

Because it will be too large for that, I get to hear. It will be not a
patch, but a full update.
Greetings
Hanjo
However the time it will take for a registered user to download the full
update using a 1MB broadband connection will be about a couple of hours for
a 200MB file. I cannot see the reason why not having it on their site as an
alternative of shipping the product for customers with this kind of
connection....

This confirms my [bad] first impressions about 2.6: IMO the product was
released in a hurry; the documentation is very poor; some 3rd parties don't
"fit well"; the SDK won't compile without warnings; etc., etc., etc. With
2.5b3 (very well documented, BTW) at least I knew how to avoid its problems.
Best regards,
Marcos Nogueira
S. Paulo - Brazil
The SDK in 2.6 is basically the same as 2.5, I don't think it is fair
to hold that against 2.6, but it is good that they are looking to
improve it.
I have not installed 2.6 but it does look to be exactly what was
promised.

Brian told us too, that the time to release 2.6 was a part of the
treaty with CA (He had to undersign before he had seen the code..... )
So let me say: the 2.6 is not far better (as we wished it) as the 2.5,
but it is better.
Greetings from the baltic
Hanjo
That'd be a good move.
-Marc-

Highly risky! If not for the support he gets from the users base, releasing
a buggy product could lead to its death (remember VO 1.0).

I support that - thinking of 2.6 Fedex to exUsa is more than 10% of
the VO Price... i'd much prefer that money go to Brian, than to Fedex
;-)
Karl-
I think you have to have a strategic view of 2.6 -
If Brian had not taken that BIG risk, then VO would just decay into nothing
very quickly.
I paid for 2.6 because it was cheaper for me to invest in the future of VO,
than lose it altogether and have to learn another language.
As I understand it, 2.7 was the target that Brian tried to hit, but to make
CA's deadline he had to keep with the old compiler. Like you, I know 2.5b3
and will continue to use that until 2.7 arrives.
Brian took an enormous risk with VO, and we risked some money on 2.6 to give
him support. I'd do it again!

Yes, this is proven. If you have 2.6 you can test for yourself. And if you want
any future fixes or enhancements in VO - ever - they will be based on the VO 2.7
version, which is itself based on 2.6. VO 2.5 is dead.

This is what I've been doing in the past few weeks, and am not convinced
yet. Again, Ginny, please remember that our realities differ a lot - few
customers here in Brazil have a Win2kSP3 (or XP Pro) workstation to work
on...

It sure is lookin like that now! After using VO for 8 years, this is the
end of the line. When I bought the 2.6 upgrade I thought I could get a few
more months, even years out of VO 2.x. From what I have been able to read
here, my present copy of RP is not supported in 2.6...I am pretty much done.
VO 2.5 will have to do until I can move all my lagacy VO apps over to C#. I
really can't justify spending any more time or money on Brian's project.

I suppose, you didn't read right. VO 2.5 is dead, but VO is pretty
alive.
If you just read some threads above, the PR 2.11 is solved too.

Maths in our country seems to be a little different. I calculate a 1MB
connection to do a 200MB in about 26 minutes. (...assuming 1 Mega Bit per
sec on 200 Meg bytes) <g>.
However its not the point. Firstly there is the download cost from the ftp
site supplying this. It is considerable. Next there is the inconvenience of
traffic interruptions or not having a neat CD with everything self
contained. So, for something so large, I think a CD is greatly preferable.

You're showing your usual ignorance Phil.
Its not the general rule. Even in Oz.
I have a 2MB connection so my downloads are even faster. But I'd sooner have
a CD pre-burnt and posted. Why clog up the internet with all that traffic.
In the end it has to go onto a CD so it might as well start that way.
Geoff

It is the general rule in OZ and quite a few countries because 90% of the
traffic is into OZ rather than accessed externally from this country. The
pricing of bandwidth traffice gives significant discounts given to providers
for 'back traffic'
There is a formula for charging for the ratio of INBOUND and OUTOUND
traffic.
So a net importer whereby no hosting by an ISP pays more per megabyte.
It is a clever way to do business so that an ISP providor needs to or wants
to create traffic and host traffice and therefore create more overall
business.
Geoff, before you make such stupid and ill informed statements, why not
check the facts !!

I always quote Telstra prices to most people I host for.. because if I can
get these prices I am rich $$$$
You can get many many sites in OZ or around the world who will allow you
FREE downloads to fill their traffic quota.
Here is 2 minutes research on Google.
Lets see for $22.95 a month you can have 600 megs of your data and 60gigs of
download a month.
So you can have 3 x 200 megs of programs.
So lets see if you had VO2,7 and the figure of 200 megs was mentioned as a
download size.
So that is 300 delivers at the rate of $0.07 cents a month per download
client.
And you can even do better than that if you keep looking.

Check the fine print. These are "toy" sites that lack the important features
such as SQL Server, private FTP facilities, a bunch of extensions and all
sorts of things. And who are they? How long will they last? They are not the
places to park serious websites.

So a minute ago you were quoting "free". Do you now acknowledge there is a
cost? And once the ceiling is reached, what is the cost per MB after that?
Even at your 7c/download, what happens if 100,000 people want the download?
You are still up for serious money.

Geoff you cannot count....... but we know your budget snip[ You are still

So it seems serious money to you is 7 cents.. How many cups of coffee
could you buy in England for 7 cents ???
So you must have been really pissed off when it cost about $5.00 Australian.
Lets see if Brian sold 100,000 copies of VO2.7 ( which I am sure he would
delighted in...<G>) and his distribution cost was say 7 cents a unit then I
am sure he can easily afford a doubling of his costs to 14 cents.
There is a cost for everything but lets see your calculation for 100,000
FEDex delivery charges and the time for somebody to prepare those parcels
for delivery.. not to mention the cost of burning this many CD's and the
Oops factor after you burned 50,000 you realised you left a file of the CD
and shit we have to start again.
Web delivery for software is the way to go...
Lets see I use Help n Manual , CuteFTP, Wise 9, bBrowser, MDreport, VO2ADO,
PHP, mySQL and many others and all are FTP downloads.. simple clean and
efficient.
All my new VO users are all getting the soft installated and maintained from
the Web and fractions of the costs of burning CD's and updating via any
other means.
When there is a later version I receive or my clients notification and
I/they have it 10 minutes later.
