Well, it isn't.
Here is what I found (note; the FREE version):
In the free version you can not include any (custom/adapted dialog).
The user can not change the installation directory, determine which
shortcuts to install, read an ULA or anything. Just the default
stuff. It does not support multi-lingual support. It does not support
running other programs before, during or after install. It does not
support passworded and encrypted installs. It does not support for
digitally signed installs and uninstalls. It does not feature a
Pascal like script language to do about all you could think.
You can do all these things in Inno Setup. For free.
I should have looked better in
http://www.advancedinstaller.com/feats-list.html
then I wouldn't have wasted 2 hours of my time.
I think the $ 299-$ 1599 depending on the version or maintenance is
simply not justified. See http://www.jrsoftware.org/isinfo.php to see
Inno setup latest version features. It includes this all free, is easy
to edit, it supports Server 2008 and W7 + 64 bit, digitally signed
installs etc.
I was just wondering for a project if I could create different
settings easier with Advanced installer, or if it would support
anything that Inno doesn't. As far as I could detect, only the
prerequisit section (min amount of memory, Windows version, .Net
framework etc) is present in Advanced free and not in Inno. And
Advanced has a GUI interface, but especially selecting a large number
of files in different directories therefor cost much more time than
when I do that in Inno. I consider this UI a minor advantage; after
all we are IT professionals ans would not have problems with some
editing in the script. On the contrary. The script can be generated
by the way in Inno Setup with about the same wizards Adanced
supports.
So Geoff, please stop calling Inno Setup a "toy" compared to Advanced
Free version. It's the other way around except for the pre-requisits.

The product full version costs $299, not $1599. And that is US dollars
so it is half that in Euros. I am not advocating Enterprise for anyone
in this forum unless they need java integration. Especially not based on
the new feature comparison list by I have an Enterprise edition and use
it! On top of that they charge $100 per year US for maintenance which is
excellent. This is CHEAP Dick, CHEAP.
If you are too miserly to pay for features you don't often need then
stop complaining and whinging in forums like this and just go away. But
if you want a professional installer to do all the usual things, Inno
Setup just cannot do it. If all you need is in InnoSetup (and you
concede you basically do bugger all in your installs) then for Christ
sake stop whinging and getting involved in discussions in which you
clearly have no interest or experience with.
If anyone needs a professional installer, with GUI dev environment and
wants to customise installer dialogs and add things like automated
updates, patches, version control, firewall ports, domain users, new
folders, security, IIS virtual directories, registry keys, side-by-side
msi or exe packages, etc, etc then Advanced Installer is the way to go.
It is certainly superior to Wyse or InstallShield for the price. If you
can't afford $300 US then don't buy it.

Geoff,
>You don't read Dick. Go to school.
If it's only for once, can't you admit that you were wrong. Answer: no
you won't as usual.
You've repeatedly posted that the FREE version of Advanced Installer
was superior to Inno Setup. Well it isn't.
I don't care if the paid version is cheap or not, I've compared the
FREE version with the FREE Inno Setup on your repeated recommendation!
What a waste of time.
This recommendation is incorrect. The free version of Advanced
installer is a toy and not the other way around. Understandable, yes
sure, they make their living with the paid version. But DON'T
RECOMMEND THINGS IF YOU DON'T WHERE YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT. Again,
because of your reading problem: I am talking about the FREE version.
And to tell me I don't read is a joke. It's you who never read more
than 10 words of any message and directly hit reply. Hence your
comments are wrong at least 50% of the times. So who needs to go to
school?
I now know that you have never tested Inno Setup or Advanced installer
free version as I did. You just write something....
Dick
You should not be complaining about free versions because they are just that
FREE. You should focus instead on productivity and professional results.
You should not compare apple and oranges in installers technology.
If you are serious about installers, then get something more professional
that will take less time and produce a quick result. I looked at InnoSetup
myself; yes it's free (but asks for optional donations), but that does not
make it a better product despite all of its attempts to use Pascal scripting
style that it seems to entrenched in. It is for people who to write
installation the hard way!
I am using the Advanced Installer Enterprise Edition. In the past I used
Wise Builder and tried other installer from various companies. If you have
not used paid installation programs then you do not know what you are
missing <bg>.

Hello Jamal,
>You should not be complaining about free versions because they are just that
>FREE.
No, I think you misunderstand me too. It's completely logical that
functionality is (far) less than the paid version. I installed it
because Geoff had repeatidly posted that the (FREE) version is
superior to (free) Inno Setup. And this is absolutely not the case so
I wished he hadn't.
I directly believe that the paid version is good software, with some
minor annoyances only. However, as I don't need any of the
functionality present in Advanced .. and not in Inno..(now) I do not
need the paid version (now).
I only planned to switch to the free version, on Geoff's
recommendation, to replace Inno, so I could learn the advantages and
eventually switch to the paid one. Now the free one appears to be
about useless I feel that I wasted my time. I am back to Inno.
Dick
Hello Marc,
>When you installl ISTool, you get e perfect GUI for Inno.
>GL Inno-ing.. I think Inno is great too!
That's a great one indeed! I am going to download it. Thanks for
pointing me to that.
I personaly find it unbelievable that so much functionality is given
for free.
Dick
Thankyou Jamal. Dick's argument about the best 'free' version is
specious and he won't admit that. <sigh>
