Just a short note to let all newsgroup users that are missing Geoff's
daily postings that he will be back in the saddle later this week when
he returns to Oz.
Like most other readers I have read Geoff's posts and wondered what
type of person this guy is. Well last night a few of us had the
pleasure of meeting him & Paul Piko in the flesh. Instinctively I
knew Paul would be a nice gentle guy but had my reservations about
Geoff. I was absolutely spot on about Paul but was way off the mark
about Geoff. He will probably hate me for writing this but actually
he is really a very friendly person who most people with a sense of
humor would like.
Sorry Geoff if I have blown your bad guy image, but I had to let all
the other readers out there now about the real Geoff. Thanks to Paul
& Geoff for a very enjoyable evening.
Regards to all
John
Gee,

No, I was there as well and I can confirm that it was soft drinks and
lemon tea all round - Honest!! (I am not sure what happened later in

They did manage to get 79 runs in the last innings. Which is better than
the Pakistan side which got 79 and 73 in two innings.
One poor Aussie cricket commentator went to the Toilets and when can back

Is there another team they can send over for the rest of the Test

Very generous to the Pakis mate - take off about 20 runs each innings and it
would be more to the point. The Poms were absolutely super getting to a
grand total of 79 odd.
Next test Poms v. Pakis - all over in 1 day - all 4 innings
I suppose it happened to the Poms, because of the Qld sun. Very hot if you
aren't at a beach, even hotter when we played the Pakis. You are obviously a

In Geoff's case, two out of three aint too bad.
You've got to understand one thing about us Aussies. We love having a "dig"
(see, we even have our own vernacular for it). In fact, getting offended by
such banter in considered very bad form and un-Australian.
Ok, so we're a weird lot. When the rest of the world can beat us at cricket,
football (not the pommy kind), tennis, swimming etc. then, and only then,
are you allowed to comment.
Unless of course your just getting into the spirit, in which case, sledge

I was tempted to write to Fred, to tell him that all Australian men
are born with two dicks, because they can't be that silly playing with
one. But, I chickened out, because of all the hate mail I would start

I have worked with Ozzies abroad, and I really enjoyed their company.
One, Terry Flynn from Esperance changed my vocabulary for life. Sadly
he's gone North now and is sadly missed.
G'day you B*****ds
John
Esperance.. now that is a place a lot of Aussies have not been and a great
getway.
Where it is... ? Ok it is on the bottom / southern side of Western
Australia in Great Australian Bite and the only thing more southerly than it
is the South Pole.
For those that remember the Sky Lab space station of about 18 years ago or
so....Esperance is its resting spot. When it came crashing to earth the
pieces left are in the museum there.
This is place has the most amazing beaches and they names like 40 mile beach
and 30 mile beach and 20 mile beach and they are definitely that long and
have beautiful white sand and really deep blue ocean. The water is
absolutely freezing compared to air temperature.
This is the first place in Australia I ever saw Wind Farms for generating
power and I was told Esperance is the second windiest place in Australia.
The main reason is the air from the flat desert areas seems to move in and
out from the cost via this zone.
There are an group islands off the coast which I visited one day which have
Whales and Seals and heaps of wild birds. It is almost a predator free
zone... On the beaches there was this stuff that reminded me of the stuff
in Teddy bears of old. You now the brown filling. The beaches here had long
mounds of this material and I found out it is dried out KRILL that the
whales eat. It is blown by the wind ashore and deposited
The problem for Esperance is it remoteness and it say 1500 kilometres to
Perth and 3500 kilometres to Sydney.
The mention of its name brought back some great memories of the days we were
there and it was a State record of 50 degrees centigrade.
Damn that is hot..
I now return you to you normal program............

The windiest place being Geoff's office, of course. :)
That is actually the Australian Taxation Office..
I had the spell checker on for this an it changed my wording...bugger....<G>
snip[ The windiest place being Geoff's office, of course. :]

there must be about 16 near Geoffs place.. and 4 more at the office.

Your in the Netherlands ....
snip[ Any hostels in the neighbourhood? ]
It is reasonably commercial town now and certainly not the Outback but just
isolated and good distance via road.
I found accommodation quite expensive and very good quality.
Not that far from Esperance is town called ALBANY. and this was a major
Whaling town.
When Whaling was abandon in around say even as late as 1978 they turned the
whaling station into a museum and they dragged the last whaling ship up onto
dry land and it is part of the museum.
Ironically the area makes more money from Whale watching these days than the
height of the whaling era.
This stretch of coast is beautiful. I do not know the diving market there
unfortunately.

I don't even doubt that. But don't try to tell him about code optimization

When I was working in Barbados I gave a coffee table book on Oz as a gift to
the company I was working for. One of the locals was browsing through it and
he came and asked me (pointing to a picture) "Why do they call this place 70
Mile Beach?"
Since 70 miles was roughly twice the circumference of his entire country he
was having a little trouble picturing a beach that long.
I didn't have the heart to tell him about 140 Mile Beach.
Mike.
> Sounds like a nice diving spot!
As a general rule of thumb in Oz, if there are lots of seals and whales, you
do not want to dive there. Following the seals are usually the white
pointers and other sharks and you will look a lot like a seal when dressed
in your wetsuit.
I know Phil said no predators but I'm guessing that applies only to the
land.
You also do not swim in the rivers up north, though there are a lot fewer
sharks up there. The crocs eat them you see.
Mike.
You description matches the one Terry gave me, if anything he made it
sound even better. God how that guy could make me laugh. I would
give anything to see him again, but I guess that will have to be in
the next life.

When your drive across the Nullabor Plains there is one stretch of road that
is 132 miles without a turn or elevation change for the entire distance..
So that is 132 miles absolutely dead straight and then it ends at the Great
Australia Bight and then you have 200-300 feet cliffs for a 600 kilometres
coast line.
Now that is the wide open spaces.

Pleased to learn that you and Paul made it back back safe & sound. We
really must thank you both for the stirling effort to drive all that
way to meet a few faces on a miserable wet November evening. Special
thanks to Paul for organising it all and getting us of our butts, it

I think I got flashed by a speed camera on the way home. They are
doing extensive construction on the Heads of the Valleys road and have
