Hello All,

The long awaited Service Pack 4 for Visual Objects 2.8 is now available.

To order. http://www.grafxsoft.com/2vo28SP4.htm

As you can see, if you take the time to read the what's new document at....

http://www.grafxsoft.com/whatsnew28SP4.htm

You will find that so much work has been done, that we probably should have
called this product 2.9, however this would have cost us a lot money with a
certain large company. In any case, the build is feature packed and well
worth reading the what's new document.

If your interested in a .NET version of the Visual Objects language, you
should check out GoVulcan.NET (http://www.GoVulcan.NET)

All the best,

Brian

Hi Brian,

I notice that the readme states that certain 3rd party products will
not work with the new repo. Can you identify which ones these are and
whether there are new versions of these products that will work with
SP4, and if there are will there be additional costs for these.

I am currently using VO2.8 with SP3 and the 3rd party products I use
are VO2ADO, Report Pro 3.9 and Willies right sle do you know if the
current versions of thes ewill be OK with SP4 or not.

Regards,
Ian

Hello Ian.
Ian.

The simple rule is that if we change the REPO... and we made a LOT of
changes (to fix bugs and enhance behaviors, all libs, and 3rd party
products need to be rebuilt in that version SP4.

Report Pro 3 has been recompiled in SP4. If you send your serial number to
sales(at)grafxsoft.com we will send you a link to download with the
designer.

Report Pro 2 now has limited support for PDF output. This is going to be a
pay for upgrade. 99.00 with serial 149.00 without.

For VO2ADO, you have to visit http://www.heliks.nl/products/vo2ado

Willies Right SLE contact Willie.

For bBrowser http://www.votools.de/english/index.htm

All third parties took place in beta, and have had a copy of SP4 for more
than a few weeks, so It's really up to the individual author.

Best "rule of thumb" is check with the author of your third party product.

Hope this helps

Brian

Which version will that be?
I use ReportPro 2.16j for years now and this already has a full PDF
support, I mean that PDF output works 100% including graphics. Calling
it 'limited support' seems to be a bit too modest <g>. The only
difference I find with 'general' PDF drivers is that the PDF's are
somewhat larger (although with the additions below in RPWIN.INI it's
not too bad)

I assume the paid upgrade is for those who don't have 2.16j?

It's usually listed in the 'Whats New' doco in the patches.

That would also depend on which version of VO you want to use it with.

RP is VO version dependant, so if your using -
VO2.5 - RP V2.11 is the on you want
VO2.6 - RP V2.12 - (did RP3 come out for this VO version??)
etc....

So it doesn't matter what changes have been made in each RP version as
you'll use/get the version that works with your development tool version
(whether or not it has the features you want/require<bg>)

Unless you buy the source (v2 and/or v3) then you can
add/remove/fix/adjust/embellish whatever you like.

can you please confirm that rp2.16j comes with sp4 ?

please also confirm that the embedded designer [RP2DSN32.dll] comes as
long as we provide our serial number. or is this what we have to pay
an additional us99$ for ?

thanks

Hi Stephen

I'm already using RP 2.14d on VO 2.8 SP3.
Trying to establish what you get for the $99/149 in going up to 2.16j (or
whatever the latest RP2 is).

Leigh,

Is there a list of changes from Report Pro 2.14d to 2.16j anywhere?

No. It's main new feature is that it will output reports in the form of a
PDF (With out additional add on's)

The reason I use the word limited support, is that we do NOT have feature
for feature what Adobe can create.

We are limited to a number of imbedded graphics file types.

Hope that's more clear.

Hope this is more clear.

If you do not own a report pro license, you need a new one. (see
grafxsoft.com)

If you have a Report Pro 2 license (serial number) and you want just
Report Pro == 99.00

If you have a Report Pro 2 license (serial number) and you want Report Pro 2
and the designer == 149.00 USD.

I am on holiday at present, then on my return i have to spend a few days at hospital for some more heart tests ...

so i have to buy sp4, and rp2 $149 upgrade for the designer WITH my serial no.

will the sp4 upgrade install allow me to create a new repository of sp4 based on my sp2 repo ? i went back from sp3 to sp2 which has my two production repos.

can willie please confirm that the multi-section reports that i sent for testing for pdf export work ok ? if not then i might as well stick with sp2 ...

Hi Brian

What do you say to your customers who have just spent money only weeks ago on your last patch to 2.8, which did not in anyway resolve the ongoing problem we are experiencing with version 2.8?

I would love to make use of the new patch except we have now down graded all our sites on the 2.8 release as it is not fit for purpose. Exactly the same code as 2.7 only the 2.8 release has regular dynamic memmory problems/crashes, dialogues refuse to show and the fonts suddenly enlarge and fields dissappear regularly. All this and still I have not had an explaination as to why this has happended. Only a vague finger pointed at Anti-virus when the Anti virus is disabled and exe and dlls white listed. Then persuaded to invest in the last patch which had no effect whatsoever.

Support is practically non existant. I have had no reponse to my email sent 3 days ago and have almost lost a customer as a result.

Can you please give me a reason why our 2.7 exe is more stable than our 2.8 exe? The code is even written and comiled in 2.8 and then exported to 2.7 still fine.

I'm very sorry, but for me 2.8 apps are far more stable than these in
2.7 (I'm using SP3 at this moment).

You said you have dynamic memory problems. Do you have "memory low"
errors? For sure, 2.8 is a little bit more demanding than 2.7, and it
could be that the 2.7 version is near to the limit, whereas the 2.8
goes over this limit.

Personally, in my largest app I need to make this call

SetMaxDynSize( 0x8000000 )

to make it work. Memory is cheap these days, and this app is absolutely
stable.

I agree. the apps that I use for testing new builds are more stabile with
2.8 but I also had to increase my dynamic memory.

As nice as problems are, sometimes they may be simpler as as it is.

I had this problem a time back, it's on the newgroup i receive dynamic memory low because i am importing lots of tekst to numeric i.e. VAL() function. But VAL() creates a AtomTable Value because of special caculations etc. But when it is just some text..... YEAH another AtomTable value....
Simple, i use normal VAL() everywhere, but import routines i use this:

FUNCTION PreventAtomTableVal(cVar AS STRING) AS USUAL PASCAL
IF SubStr3(LTrim(cVar),1,1)$"012345678.,-+"
RETURN Val(cVar)
ELSE
RETURN 0
END IF

Alwin,

I'm using Type(),

like
IF TYPE( cString ) = 'N'

r8 := Val(cString)

ELSE

/ / do something else

ENDIF

and in your function
IF SubStr3(LTrim(cVar),1,1)$"012345678.,-+"
aren't you missing the "9" ??

That code probably won't compile and/or the 'IF'can never evaluate to TRUE.

If cString is a number (ie type = 'N' ) then
val( number )
will get you a compile time error - val() takes a string parameter.

Had al lot of problems, and solved it with GrafxSoft directly this way. It was the only way, they told me...

Because: all functions evaluate it first to see if it is scientific etc. and if it is not, it returns 0. But still a symbol is created, because it is not removed.
