Without cutting and pasting parts of this article.. I see the comments as
very accurate.
Clearly our companies future is Open Source development tools and some
commercial systems. We are seeing the inroads of Open Office / Star Office
more and more as the difference between $1100 and $99 for licensing is
evaluated. We see the supply and updating of our own software is all web
and we have never shipped a single CD of our systems yet.. it is all web
deployed and mantained.
It is working for us and I see one of my major competitor a little worried
about what we are doing is offering their program for FREE as a monthly
service rental to try and win some sales.
Also the comments of users/clients needing parts of an application are so
true and the client / server model is growing rapidly.
I see the recent Server sales posted saw a 5% growth overall but the Linux
growth was 90%.
I see also Microsofts latest more to PATENT the .NET iniative may stiffle
its future as well if the patent is granted.
I am not sure how this will effect vendors who back .NET and what control
Microsoft may have over them.
Yep change is coming very very fast.

This is why we are moving to a PHP and mySQL model for the stuff we cannot
do in VO.
But the other issue is also multi platform as well.
