May I suggest the following:

comp.lang.clarion.binaries

We would try to get everyone who posts files on Compuserve to post to
this place as well. This will allow people who do not have access to
Compuserve Libraries benefit as well to the many Third Party files,
freeware and examples, patches, and information.

How could we get that started? Anyone support me on this one?

Nice idea, I would certainly support it but I haven't a clue how to go
about setting it up.

Why not use a FTP site? Or do some people not have FTP access and
only newsgroup access? The nice thing about FTP is the files are
persistant. Newsgroup messages get flushed constantly.

Best idea I've seen in... at least days<g> This would also enable
people who are posting large binary files here (which is wrong) to
post it to the new newsgroup. I'm sure Steve MacLeod will be able to
comment on how to set this up. You might try to e-mail to him at:

Another option would be to use the FTP sites. IceTips has a fairly large
Clarion collection. I have a Clarion area on mine that I drop files I have
into whenever some asks for them. You can upload files to
ftp://ftp.icetips.com/incoming or to ftp://ftp.compguy.com/incoming.

I would personally prefer FTP over another newsgroup because:

1) File generally transfer faster via FTP
2) Files on a newsgroup are stored all over the Internet in several news
servers - takes more space
3) You wouldn't have to read another newsgroup
4) FTP files would generally be visible longer

If there are any problems with this or if you want to see this and

Not a bad idea (FTP site)

I have a server which can be accessed - but anything over x number of
meg bandwidth, I'll be charged....but, it might be so minimal -

If so, I can set it up at my site.

But, we would have to make sure this is ok with TopSpeed. Maybe
TopSpeed would like to host it themselves and I don't want to step on
anybodies toes - but I really think we need it.

I agree with you Steve ... the FTP sites are more flexible I think ...
I used to mention that binaries should not be posted because a lot of
people found it a problem downloading the big messages.

It is also a waste of bandwith as the file must be uuencoded and this
of course makes it bigger.

I think an FTP site or a mirrored ring of FTP sites is superior.

Just my $ .02<g>

They can indeed as Icetips has been mirroring TS ftp site for a long
time and Icetips is mirrored in Africa and we are planning on a mirror
in Europe (guess where<g>)

If you are talking about ftp at TS, I don't think you need to worry.
I don't know how it is right now, but in not so distant past they were
not able to have a upload area at their ISP.

Icetips have been one of the largest ftp site for Clarion since we
started it almost two years ago, but due to server upgrade it's
unfortunately down over the weekend. I believe it's mirrored to one
server in Africa and we are working on a European mirror, because
transfers from USA are instollerably slow on this side of the pond.
It's quite possible that the web site will be mirrored here too later
on.

Robert,

We are constructing our own server as we speak. The T1 line should be
ready sometime in the next few days (keep your fingers crossed). When
everything is setup and running, there will be an announcement.

With FTP - you aren't able to see full descriptions, right?

How bout running the new site via Internet Connect? Can you do that
and have it webbased with descriptions, file names and search
capibilities?

I have a friend in Finland who is willing to offer
disk space for a European mirror if necessary.
There is currently a 256K line to the site which should be
sufficient for the FTP service.

Interested? If so, please email your enquiries to me
or to jouni...@microstep.fi who also works with
Clarion and has done that for about ten years by now
(and helped me _a_lot_ with my problems).

Thanks for the offer, but we are currently planning it on a server
here in Denmark (which my employer uses). It has it's advantages to
have it "close" to home;)

Hi Arnor,

I am the chap who offered to mirror Icetips in South Africa, the last
time
I offered I think I got 4 posts from people in this neck of the woods,
not
really enough to justify it. However my offer is still open if there is
a need
I will happily set it up.

I recently set an incoming area for people who were having problems
locating your server

ftp://netweb.netline.co.za/pub/Incoming/clarion/

Let me know if you would like to have a mirror.

Cheers
