Hi everyone,

We have a problem with our application that uses TPS files. We have file
with 50000 records which we must browse and create some totals. On machine
where the TPS files resides (1.2 Ghz processor) we get results in 10-15 secs
and through the 100Mbit network we wait for results as much as 10 minutes
(sometimes more). Can anyone give me some suggestion? Is this related to
Clarion or network? I must state at this time that copying files through the
network is working like a charm. We tried to reduce the network traffic for
test purposes by using only two PCs but the results are the same.

The problem is getting much bigger when we filter files or use files with 1
000 000 records or more.

Any help will be appreciated.

Best regards,
Alex

Loose the the filter and the totals and see what happens. I had the same
problems until I started using keys instead of filters. The problem is that
when you use the filter all records are copied over the network and the
filtering is done on the local PC. When you use a key only the records that
meet the range limit are copied over the network and everything will work
faster.
The automatisk totalling on the browse is just to slow. I don't know why.

Hope it helps!

Which NOS are you using?

I give the user the option to have filters and/or totals. I put a checkbox
on the browse screen which is off by default, and of course it runs fast.

For exactly the same reason that the filter is slow - it has to read all the
records, and then calc the total.

We have many different (in terms of OS) sites where our app works but the
problem stays the same. Mostly Win2000, Win98 or XP clients using TCP\IP
protocol. We got better results with manualy configured IPX\SPX protocol and
NetBEUI.

Still we are having great problems when it comes to generating screen
reports on large databases.

Our client has more than 1 500 000 records in only one table and our
software is operating with more than 250 tables currently. They are
expecting this number of transactions in first quater this year and we must
do something to speed up reporting with this data.

Best regards,
Alex

Hi,

maybe you have the same problem than I another guy from Germany, but we
still did not get it solved. Because my client is far away from me, I have
no possibilities to make quick and intensive tests. The network cannot be
the problem in general, because 100MBit is faster or nearly as fast as
direct access to harddisk. It must have to do with a special configuration
of the network or network card.
My client got a new PC and from this point on access was incredible slow.
All other workstations are fast as ever. Removing the PC with a Laptop,
access is fast again. I am assuming it's the configuration of the network
card, but I don't know what to do.
Another client had have the same problem after installing a new PC. Then he
run a tool from another software supplier, and speed is there without
changing anything else, so I am rather sure, it must be some configuration,
but what?
Maybe this hints may help you. If you have success, I would be glad if you
tell me by this forum and personally to my email: erik.s...@oz-sdt.de .
Thanks

Erik

Once again,
I forgot to mention, I think the problem is, because access to tps is, that
it reads one record after another. When copying a file, speed is still fast.
So my idea:
It takes some time to make a connection to the other PC, say 10ms for
example.
Copying then is instant with speed of network.
I suppose, when configuration is wrong, then the network card makes a new
connection for every record that will be read. So if you have 1000 records
it would be10000ms for connection (equals 10s). When configuration is o.k.
then the connection will be once and held until all records are read and is
closed when timeout or closing the file occurs.
Maybe this thoughts will another little bit.

Hi Erik,

Thanks for quick answer. We are currently in process of testing network
equipment (cards, switches, packet size etc). If we find something interesting I
would be glad to share it with comunity :)))

Best regards,
Alex

Alex,

You can use the benchmark I created to test TPS files.

Hi Alex,

We noticed the same problem. But if you are the only user things go very
fast at once. I suppose there's some MU locking mechanism that prevents the
data from showing itself fast enough not to get bored. There's also this
write behind stuff that we had to do in order to work around a "feature" in
NT4 server. Changing these registry settings on and off make a lot of
difference. However, as we had no answere, we changed to MS-SQL. Still I
would like to know what exactly causes this slowness.

There is a technique i use when I deal with slow tps network
application. Instead of using browsr or report templates, i do my own
code. I create a queue and a piece of code that fills the queue from the
database and finally the queue is displayed in a list box.
Works much faster than the ordinary way.

Hi Denis,

Do you have a example of such code ?
