A free download of the beta of the TopSpeed ODBC driver (16- and
32-bit versions) for the TopSpeed file format is now available. For
the first time, end users can access TopSpeed databases using
database and reporting tools from other vendors. The TopSpeed ODBC
driver works like any other ODBC driver. You or your end users set
up the data source name using the ODBC administrator, and connect to
it just like any other ODBC data source.

More and more, end users are getting sophisticated at sharing between
applications, and users want access to data in custom applications.
Sometimes, the need is for custom reporting that goes beyond basic
reporting tools capabilities: such as pivot tables, scientific
graphs, or complicated data warehousing/data modelling analyses.
Other times, some simpler, one-shot tasks, such as data export to
different platforms for use by service bureaus, or one time
mail-merge use in a Microsoft Office Wizard, is more sensibly handled
at the end user level rather than building various export procedures
in the application. That is what the TopSpeed ODBC driver is for --
tasks that are more appropriately handled by the end user than a task
that belongs in a program developed by a professional developer for
the end user.

You can download beta copies of both the 16- or 32-bit drivers now;
however, these betas will time-out at the end of June 1997.

The TopSpeed ODBC driver will be available in July 1997. Pricing is
based on a "per user" basis. The final price of the driver will be
$199 for an initial 5-pack, $299 for a
10-pack and $499 for a 20-pack. Call 800-354-5444 for pricing on
higher volumes or to place an order. For orders outside the United
States, contact your local distributor.

Just to make it clear, I think it's only fair that you charge a reasonable
price for the ODBC driver. What I don't understand is why you won't sell
single user licenses. I only need a single license, and actually several of
my small customers also only needs a single license. Are we allowed to buy
a 5, 10 or 20 pack and then split it up and sell single user licenses from
the pack to our customers???

Would you (TopSpeed) please consider also selling a singel user license or
preferably a singel developer license. A lot of us small shops would only

need one license for testing and development purposes.

That is exactly what a 5-pack (or a 10- or 20-pack) is for. You by the
size pack of your choice and resell single user licenses to your
customers.

This was a great move from TS. I am sure this free beta gets much beta
users which should help TS to create a bug free ODBC driver.
