I'm seeking tools that would be helpful in creating web applications,
mostly for data administration purposes, but possibly to build an
online ordering system, etc. The only one I found so far is CodeCharge
and someone on their newsgroup mentioned that Clarion will be also
introducing an ASP generator.
So, here are my questions:
- Can Clarion be used to build web applications ?
- Is the version that can build websites already available ?
- If it is, how does it compare to CodeCharge, or possibly other such
tools if there are any
- Most importantly, where can I find Clarion and how much it costs ?
There are many unrelated search results on Google and none of them
even point to Clarion webpage, or at least I seem to have difficulties
finding it
Thank you,

You HAVE entered a Clarion Zone. You are NOT supposed to know
ANYTHING about Clarion. You have already revealed that you know too
much. Only Clarion Llamas and Gurus know anything about "Clarion -
The Secret Society"
This secret society is the most dedicated and intelligent group of
professional developers in the world. Do not let this fool you.
... Clarion's marketing department makes every effort NOT to reveal
anything new about the product. If you become a Clarion customer you
WILL NOT be contacted by the company with any information on the
topics you inquired about -- or anything else.

This support forum is the source of an enormous amount of information. I've
been using Clarion for several years now and the bulk of my education has
originated here, not only in replies to my questions, but also by following the
questions posted by others "climbing the learning curve".
The users I support are still struggling to get their hands around the web so I
have very little experience in the area you are looking at. Hang around a
while, it'll be time well spent.
I hope you get that answers you need.
See ya later

Yes, but haven 't done it myself

Yes

don't know, haven 't used both CodeCharge and Clarion with web capabilities
;) I write desktop app's, so ;)
I must say Clarion is the way to go for DB-apps, I mainly wrote my apps in
VB in the past, I now write them in Clarion (or let them generate by Clarion
for about 50%)

Try www.softvelocity.com , perhaps call or mail them with (further)
questions

Hope this helps a little ;) (where are you Russ, couldn't you provide
Martin with more details, I smell a new Clarioneer here ;))

Well IMHO, you have come to the right place. <g>
Here are a bunch of links to places to find out a LOT of stuff about (and
for) using Clarion to do all kinds of apps, especially database type
business management apps. "Web Apps" too.
Go to
http://www.encouragersoftware.com/profile/clarlinks.html
or
http://www.tomruby.com/clarion/ and look for all kinds of stuff.
http://www2.clarionmag.com/index.html <---- A Clarion Ezine with lots of
tips and tricks
Also www.par2.com <---- This site is a Clarion Web App example - there are
several others.
TheFAQs:
http://www.softvelocity.com/faq/faq.htm <---- This is Soft Velocity's
site - The purveyors of Clarion

CWICWEB download site:

I would suggest you give Soft Velocity a phone call about purchasing
"Clarion". Come here for your help.
A particular site you may be interested in is www.clarionet.com which is a
Clarion version of the Citrix system. I believe ClarioNET is ready for
release but it has not been released officially yet. You can download a
small "utility" from their site and then use that utility to run a demo
demonstrating how it works.
The term "Clarion" can be confusing to a newcomer. "Clarion" is actually a
"very elegant" xBase application development LANGUAGE. IOW, elegant means a
few lines of code can do a LOT compared to almost any other language.
However, "Clarion" can also be used to refer to the "system" of utilities
and tools used to develop applications using the "Clarion" language. But
that ideosyncracy is easy to get used to. <g>
A lot of app development (but not all of it) using Clarion is done using
"code templates" for procedures and "extension templates" to add to or
modify the standard code created with the procedure templates. You can
"embed" code snippets to modify the code generated for the procedures to do
your "special/unique data manipulation" stuff. There are also some
"standard embed points" handled right inside the IDE for such "standard"
things as filters and ranges etc... The IDE also provides some other embed
points to modify the functionality of the procedure and it's look-and-feel.
You can also write your own templates as several others have done. Some
cost money and other stuff is free for the downloading.
However, you CAN hand code the whole app but... WHY??? IOW, why reinvent
the wheel???
Clarion uses a file/table Dictionary Editor (written in Clarion) to design
and make the "database" itself. This Dictionary Editor is used as the 1st
step in doing a new database system. The Integrated Development Environment
(IDE) is actually a "Clarion App to develop Clarion Apps" which is then used
after the database is designed to make and maintain the actual database
application which in turn maintains and manipulates the data in your
database.
Learning "The Clarion Way" may take a short while but once it is learned
your app development and ESPECIALLY your ongoing application maintenance
goes a LOT faster and is MUCH easier to keep track of since the IDE and
other "utilities", by their vary nature, does that FOR you.

Yes. There is a module for building a website where the objective to
attempt to mimic the way a windows application looks. It is part of a
Clarion 5.5 Enterprise license. YOu can build a website that uses static
webpages with damn near any version of clarion (although I would suggest
using a later license myself).
> - Is the version that can build websites already available ?
Yep. Been around for a while. It has its detractors and its
supporters.
go to www.softvelocity.com and look in products for the Internet
Developer's Kit and the New Web technology.
