For those doing apps that process X12 EDI files, did you use a purchased
library or custom coded logic for processing the EDI documents? Looking for
recommendations for add-on tools/libraries/classes to assist in processing,
both read and write. I'm am specifically targeting HIPAA EDI transactions
(insurance related).

John,
You can buy stuff but it is very easy to roll your own!
Once you get passed the stuff that doesn't make any sense then you can go
ahead and code your logic.
After you get the format for the 837 and 835 then you simply need to adjust
the contents for each field based on what each insurance company wants in
them.
I am doing 837 Professional and Institutional. My partner is doing 935, 270
and 271. All "hand rolled". No X12 add ons necessary.
FWIW,

Ron,

I have worked with a roll-your-own solution for 837I & P translation for
about 4 years now. Was hoping for something a little less code-intensive.
Prior to that assignment, I worked with a commercial EDI translator, so I
guess I'm a little spoiled. The current platform has a limited life, so we
are looking for only a minimal investment in tools to augment current or new
x12 processes.

I found some open-source material that I might build on too. See
SourceForge.net for openx12. Although, I've done similar work in COBOL, I
was considering translating the best of both into Clarion code, if we don't
find a suitable commercial product.

Thanks,

John
