I am posting this message in case someone else is having
trouble finding and configuring a usenet client.

I downloaded pan for client.
https://pan.rebelbase.com/download/

And I am using the server

What usenet client do you use?

Is this info not shown in the message headers?

Yes. I can see thunderbird. But I am lost.

The only client that is working for me is PAN but with problems.

I tried thunderbird and seamonkey but I cannot list the groups
(for some reason) on these two clients. I press Refresh and groups
are not listed.

If you're using ES then it's tricky (if this is the same problem I used
to have with Thunderbird + ES).

You have to install and select 'always authenticate' or some such thing.
But you can't just change the setting after you've already installed it
without. Try deleting that news account, and reinstalling. Don't forget
that setting!

Without it, you get a very small number of newsgroups, one of which I
think explains why you're not seeing the rest.

For tbird (and presumably seamonkey, but I've never used it), you have
to select that "always authenticate" option.

Thunderbird on Windows 10 Pro x64 and Windows 11 Pro with E-S. Works
perfectly.

I have news.solani.org as a backup.

i2pn2.org is better, solani doesn't seem to have many articles.

Thanks, I actually have both as backups.

You have to fiddle. I had te same problem of losing Google groups and
had to resort to Thunderbird. And of course now I can't remember what I
did. But it's a known problem everyone has. Now what is it ... ?

Settings -> Account settings -> Always request authentication when
connecting to this server.

Tick it.

Now who would have imagined that?

yes this was the problem.
The other problem is that in thunderbird we need create an account
with defaults, then *BEFORE* trying it, set the "always authenticate"
and SSL, otherwise the there is no error but the comp lang c is not listed.

In your news client software you must enable mandatory authentication
upon connect. Eternal September will not list the newsgroups unless your
client authenticates first. Instructions are linked below.

If you fail to do this, you will not see the newsgroups on ES. Eternal
September also explains this. Eternal September gives detailed
instructions on how to configure this setting for many more news client
softwares on their registration portal:

As I recall (poorly, mind you -- it's been years since I've used tbird),
if you tick the box after you've already connected to E-S; restarting
tbird will let it properly auth to E-S.

Claws mail.
Also tried MicroPlanet Gravity and found it usable, but somewhat less
convenient than Claws mail.
Tried Mozilla Thunderbird too. Found it unusable.

You have to hit the "Refresh" button in the group subscription menu.

Then please ask that in alt.comp.software.seamonkey.
The current version of SM works here.

If you prefer a web interface, try that:
