Is it possible to get a copy of ANSI C standard free of cost ???

You can get copies of the draft. Google for n1256.

Probably not legally. I believe the cheapest paper copy available is
the one published by the British Standards Institution.

There is an annotated version somewhere which is cheaper, but it is
rumored that the price difference accurately reflects the value of the
annotations. It's probably not worth it if you factor in the cost of
Tipp-Exing the annotations.

By the way, C is an ISO standard now, and has been for nearly twenty
years.

The cost of the PDF is somewhat around 18 EUR. So why not take the
"original"?

Do you mean ISO C99 or ANSI ISO C89?
