I have been running Rb 5.2.4 on Mac OS X Tiger (PPC G4) for a while. For a long
time I have had an issue where it would tell me "there is a 2nd instance with
the same reg. number already running on the network" & forces me to clean out
the registration & reenter my code. Then it starts up just fine, only to go
through the same rigmarole after I quit the program once.
I am now switching to Leopard on Intel; and I am running into exactly the same
issue, which now starts to bother me really. This is a complete reinstall onto a
relatively fresh, mostly stock 10.5.7 system.
I know I did not have the same issue with it on the Panther system it started
out on. I also believe it used to work fine on the Tiger system.
Anybody else run into this? Know a fix??

I haven't had this problem with RB, but I've had something similar with
FileMaker: it seems to set a flag when it starts up that says it's
running, and clear it when it quits; so that if it crashes, the flag
never gets cleared, and when you restart it you get that message. The
solution I use is to reboot, which clears it.
Try rebooting when you get your message. If it goes away, that may
indicate the mechanism is something similar.
Hope this helps, sorry if it doesn't.

That may have helped occasionally on the G4; I still need to check on the Intel.
Rebooting is a pain, though.
Am I really the only one?

there are lot of people using rb 5.5.5
but you seems to be very few to use 5.2.4 on a 10.5 intel mac ...
rb 5.2 is really older than intel mac so I'm not surprised if it doesnt
work...
when you upgrade an hardware, dont forget the software(s) ...
good luck.

Jean-Yves,
Well, once it is up it actually seems to work fine. Also, my problem is not
Intel specific.
Upgrade to 5.5 can't really happen since it is no longer sold. The present-day
version uses activation which I do not accept (I have several machines &
want/need to be able to move things around amongst them).
I guess I should start looking around for an alternative... :-(

You can find it on Internet, I think (else, I have a copy). Perhaps your
serial for 5.2 would work for 5.5

Ok, I finally think I know what is wrong: I put the RB5.2.4 folder into the
"Developer" folder (after all, that's where it logically belongs, right?). It
appears RB5.2.4 does not like being in the Developer folder but wants to be in
the Applications folder. Moving it into the Applications folder seems to have
gotten rid of the messages (about another instance running already).
Anic297, thanks for the offer re, RB 5.5.5, however, my code will not work for
it; it was a paid upgrade. I highly doubt RealSoft will still sell keys for RB
5.5...
Thanks all,
Mac Dude
I don't know if the serial for 5.2.x works for 5.5.5, but if it does,
definitely download 5.5.5 and use it (which is accessible from
RealSoftware's FTP site). There are a few improvements in 5.5 over
5.2 that are definitely worth the upgrade, and your behavior in later
versions of OS X is certainly better. Of course, it's still Rosetta,
but life is better under 5.5.5 than under and any earlier 5.x.x.

Jonathan
