I access c.l.a through a shortcut that takes me to "http://
groups.google.com/group/comp.lang.apl/post?hl=en"

I've never thought much of the interface and it's just about to
change. Most mutations are for the worse so I don't have a great deal
of hope and I'd rather try something else.

I've seen http://www.rhinocerus.net/forum/lang-apl/ and it looks a lot
nicer than google groups but it seems it's just an archive to which
it's no longer possible to register.

Anyone out there any suggestions/opinions as to what's the best way to
subscribe?

I use Mozilla's Thunderbird as a news reader (it's also my email client)
(http://www.mozilla.org/), free and open-source, and I subscribe to
newsgroups via Eternal September (http://www.eternal-september.org/),
also free (requires a short registration). It's easy to set up within
Thunderbird. I find reading newsgroups via an actual newsreader to be
much easier than a web-based interface, but to each their own.

Another one here using Thunderbird. Can't get on with web-based email or
newsreading either.

Another free news server is nntp.aioe.org; works fine here.
