A leading Global Company is looking for a Sr Unix (Solaris/Linux) System Administration MANAGER to manage a very large Unix Sys Admin Team. Company has been public for over 3 years, has been profitable for the past 8 Quarters ($10-25MM/qtr), has YTD Net Income of $18 million and has $285+ million in cash. Company has over 1000 employees located globally.

The Sr Unix (Solaris/Linux) Systems Manager will be responsible for managing a team of 15 Sr Unix Administrators supporting 500+ Solaris and Linux Servers in a High Availability, High Internet Volume 24x7x365 environment. This is primarily a Sr Management role. The Manager will spend a large majority of their time managing the Team and on Management responsibilities. The candidate will need to demonstrate and prove (via resume and then interview) their Management expertise, practices, strategies and experience of large, Internet, Unix System infrastructures. The Systems Manager has overall responsibility for the Systems Administration Team who is responsible for the specification of UNIX server hardware to support existing or new applications/systems, including root/boot device configuration, Solaris and Linux O/S installation, configuration, kernel and network stack tuning to 3rd party software installation. The company has separate teams that are responsible for network engineering infrastructure, data backup and recovery, EMC storage, Oracle database file system administration or application performance tuning. However, it is necessary that the Unix Systems Manager and Team to have close collaboration with teams performing those tasks.

The Manager will lead the Unix Systems team of 15 Sys Admins who support all Production, Development and QA Linux and Solaris servers in for global operations. The Manager and Team have direct
responsibility for all Sun and HP hardware specification for capacity, scalability, and growth to include existing and new product/systems deployments, System installation and configuration, in preparation for system launch, including Sun/HP HW, Linux and Solaris O/S, middleware and 3rd party software as applicable, ongoing maintenance of system Sun and HP hardware, Solaris and Linux O/S, configuration, and security, and especially Solaris/Linux server performance tuning.
More specifically the Unix Sys Admin team will monitor system activity and tune system parameters and configurations to optimize performance; monitor disk space and control usage,
create a detailed project plans, and implement migration path to upgrade software and servers, create and manage user accounts and file directories, support rapid development and deployment projects, build and deploy automated tools and systems, use methodical troubleshooting skills to resolve complex issues, create from scratch new Perl and shell scripts to automate various processes and have full responsibility for web systems monitoring and tuning/configuring for high availability and performance.

The company is running 100+ Solaris 7.x/8.x and 220+ Redhat Linux servers on Sun Netra T1, 280R, 420R E3500, E4500, E6800 and E10K*s, Intel and HP-DL 360/580 hardware running Apache/iPlanet web servers and WebLogic and ATG Dynamo Application Servers. The Solaris servers are used to support the Production environment and the Redhat Linux servers are used to support the web server environment that is handling 2+ million hits/day in a very high volume, HA 24x7x365 Internet environment. The company currently writes ksh, bourne and Perl scripts for automation and system duties, cfengine, Sendmail and Postix for email, Solaris Jumpstart and Kickstart server for booting, CVS for Change/configuration management and BIND DNS.

Non-Technical
Responsibilities:
Creating the department environment for productivity, including standards, processes, work-related interactions between job functions

Budgetary responsibility including capital and overhead
Responsible for cost containment and product cost reduction
Systems architecture, capacity planning, and troubleshooting
Infrastructure reengineering to reduce costs or improve product quality
Operational process definition and documentation
Operational procedures and standards
Periodic security audits
Disaster Recovery Planning

REQUIREMENTS:
MUST HAVE 2+ YEARS EXPERIENCE MANAGING LARGE UNIX SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION TEAMS OF 5+ SYS ADMINS.
MUST HAVE 5+ YEARS OF SOLARIS/LINUX SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION WITH THE LAST 3+ YEARS AS A MANAGER OF SOLARIS/LINUX SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION TEAMS.
Management experience in larger ISP, ASP or large scale Internet environments preferred.
MUST have recent experience in a high volume, high availability, mission-critical 24x7x365, 3-tier web serving Linux/Solaris environments. To be considered: this experience needs to be detailed per project/employer on your resume.
Must have previous hands-on Unix Sys Admin Management experience in large Production and/or *web serving* environments; i.e. ISP*s, ASP*s and/or true high internet volume 24x7 environments. Must have experience and be extremely
familiar with the complexities of managing a large team in this type of environment.
Technical Background should include:
6+ years of Solaris and Linux Administration running 300+ Solaris 7.x/8.x and Redhat Linux servers on Sun Netra T1, 280R, 420R E3500, E4500, E6800 and/or E10K*s, Intel and HP-DL 360/580 hardware running Apache/iPlanet web servers.
Should have previous Perl and Shell scripting experience.
Should have previous experience with web servers, preferably Apache/Iplanet.
Should have previous experience building, configuring, deploying, troubleshooting and tuning web server farms, preferably with Linux and Solaris.
Must have a proven understanding/knowledge of Networking and Database principles. For example, working side-by-side, in conjunction with, WAN Engineers (preferably Cisco) and DBA*s (preferably Oracle) in tuning/configuring web systems to perform at high levels.
Excellent methodology to troubleshoot various kinds of problems (network, hardware and operating system related problems).
BS and/or MS in Computer Science or a related Engineering background
