Why number of comments other than stated? And blank replies.

Why does it show a number of comments that is different than those
actually present? And I know about including replies. For example, the
page I'm looking at says "2 Comments", and yet there's only one (and
there isn't a reply to it).
Also, sometimes, it shows that there's a reply to a comment, but when I
click on that, nothing happens, other than the little triangle
inverting. (It doesn't even show the handle of the replier, which it
would if they'd entered a blank reply.)

It's not the pace of life that concerns me, it's the sudden stop at the end.
