SECTION 0: THE BASICS

0.1: WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS DOCUMENT?

The Sharp Wizard/Zaurus Frequently Asked Questions and Answers List
(FAQ) is intended to help reduce the number of repeat questions
that appear in the Sharp Wizard section of the Palmtop A
CompuServe forum and the Sharp Zaurus section of the Palmtop B Compuserve foru
It helps users with questions by providing instant access to their answers;
it helps other readers of the section, who will have to read fewer of the
questions they see over and over again.

Often answers to frequently asked questions are already
available in the section's library or messages in one or more
documents. In these cases, this FAQ will tell the reader where
to find the information in question. Thus, when possible, this
document will only point you to another document - that one may
have the information you need, or it may point you somewhere
else. This approach is beneficial because it reduces
duplicated work and it increases your chances of finding the
most current, reliable information.

The editor tries to keep this document current, remember that
the Wizard/Zaurus line and accessories available from both Sharp and
3rd party vendors are constantly changing, so don't be surprised
if you find statements which are outdated.

0.2: HOW CAN I CONTRIBUTE TO THIS FAQ?

Contributing to this FAQ is easy! Just send me Email at the
below address, and I'll add your useful information to this FAQ,
and put your name in lights for everybody to admire (significant
contributions only). If you are sending an original contribution
please include your permission to use it. Please do not send unattributed
material as it cannot be included without the author's permission. If you
have more current information, corrections or suggestions, indicate the
version of this document you are referring to and send them to:

0.3 WHO IS A WIZARD? WHAT IS A ZAURUS? WHAT IS NOT?

Wizards are full-featured, pocket size information managers
manufactured by Sharp Electronics. The Wizard models currently
distributed in the United States are series OZ-9000 models.
All models have in common an easy-to-use graphical user
interface, a large LCD screen, pen-based panel operation,
IC card slot for applications and expanded memory, special
software features which include built-in fax software and the
sophisticated but easy to use filer application which allows
data to be organized by topics instead of data type.

The Zaurus is a wireless communications capable, keyboard enhanced,
personal digital assistant(PDA) which combines Sharp's pen based
graphical interface for note-taking and keyboard based word
processing in a pocket sized unit. The Zaurus models currently
to be distributed (expected February 1995) in the United States are
series ZR-5000 models. Both models have in common an easy-to-use
graphical user interface, a large LCD screen with a multi-windowed
display, pen-based panel operation, PCMCIA type II card slot for
applications and expanded memory, an industry standard (IRDA) infrared
port and special software features which include built-in e-mail, send
fax software and a sophisticated linking application which allows data
to be organized by topics instead of data type.

Sharp also manufactures other pocket size, electronic tools.
These are called Electronic Organizers which includes the
YO 100, 300 and 600 series models. While these are capable
products they do not have the sophisticated software, graphical
user interface and pen-based panel operation featured in the
OZ 9000 and ZR 5000 series. Only the YO-6X0 electronic
Organizers are covered in this FAQ, the YO-100 and 200 series
are not presently covered in this FAQ except with regard to
connectivity between Wizards and Zaurus's.

==============================================================================

SECTION 1: WHAT IS HOT...?

1.0: A GOOD DEAL ON A RAM CARD?

Integration Systems (800) 645-4511 has a, quantities limited,
offer on new Sharp IQ-783 256k RAM cards. These are great to
use for expanded memory or backing up a 8600 or 9600 series
Wizard. Cost $99.00. Jim Guy of Integration Systems posted
this message in the CompuServe forum on 10/3/94.

1.1 A SPECIAL OFFER ON WIRELESS INTERFACE FOR PC AND PRINTER.

Actisys till further notice has a special pricing on its
ACT-IR3S wireless Wizard interface. The list price is $269.99
and it is now available for $149.99. See the Third Party Vendor
information for further details on this device.

1.2 A SPECIAL OFFER ON IC CARDS FOR 9000 WIZARDS

RA-LIN of Syracuse, NY has some great offers on IC cards for the
9000 Wizard series and also Organizer Link software. They are
closing out their stock and many of the cards are available for
$14.99. Organizer link software at great prices and RAM cards
of varying sizes are available. Call for current stock. Speak
to Tracy (315) 472-7872 who is familiar with the Wizards. They
take credit cards and ship UPS.

==============================================================================

SECTION 2: HOW DO I...?

2.0: HOW DO I ACCESS OR BACKUP THE RAM CARD PREVIOUSLY USED WITH
A 8000 SERIES WIZARD?

OZ-9000 series products cannot use RAM cards formatted for the
OZ-8000 series, except to import data, a one-way process. You
must reformat the RAM card for the OZ-9000 series by taking the
battery out and reinserting the battery. The RAM card will lose
all of its data. Next the RAM card must be installed in the
OZ-9000 series Wizard and reinitialized. See the OZ-9000
Wizards manual for further instructions on this process. Once
you do that, the OZ-9000 and 9000 series link software,
e.g. 990W software, will recognize the RAM card.

==============================================================================

SECTION 3: MISCELLANEOUS Q & A
3.0:
Q - What is the difference betweent the 8xxx and the 8xxxs models?
A - The "s" models have a rougher texture on the outside of the case.

Q - I have a OZ-9520 and sometimes the lid slips down slowly when I am
typing, is there a simple solution to prevent this ?

A - First "reset" the hinge tightening mechanism by closing the lid (you
don't need to latch it) then rotate the display to the desired angle
without "back tracking". If you "back track" you need to "reset" the
mechanism again by closing the lid. If this doesn't work, then the
Wizard probably needs to be sent to a Sharp Service Center to be
repaired.

Q - When I use the Wizard's search function the dialog box obscures the
text I need to review, what can I do?

A - The dialog box is a freely moveable window. Just touch your pen to the
edge of the dialog box and drag it out of the way.

Product News and Rumors as of February 1995

0 - Noticed on USENET comp.sys.handheld: A programming project is being
organized to develop freeware software utilities for Sharp Wizards, see
postings in this newsgroup if you are interested.

1 - Seems like OZ-9500 Wizards are getting scarce in retail stores in New York
City, has Sharp Electronics stopped shipping new stock to dealers?
Is the model officially discontinued? Inquiring minds would like to know!

2 - A new family of handheld devices from Sharp was announced on
December 15, 1994 in New York. Two models, the ZR-5000 and ZR-5000 FX,
called the ZAURUS were introduced. Zaurus is a wireless communications
capable, keyboard enhanced, personal digital assistant which combines
Sharp's pen based graphical interface for note-taking and keyboard based
word processing in a pocket sized unit. It can send and receive E-mail,
send faxes, access on-line services, exchange information with local and
remote PCs, take notes on an electronic notepad, create maps and drawings,
generate documents with an intelligent word processor, and manage time and
information anytime, anywhere. The Zaurus extends the synergy of the pen
and keyboard established in the Wizard organizer series. Zaurus combines
the convenience of the pen, for note-taking, drawing, and accessing
information, and the productivity of a keyboard for text intensive
applications like messaging and word processing. Zaurus combines this
software with an enhanced 16-bit processor and industry standard peripheral
interfaces to make this new PDA the logical successor to Sharp's successful
Wizard products.

3 - At Comdex 1994 Sharp showed its full-sized PC-8900 and PC-8700 notebooks.
To tap into Sharp's base of almost 10 million Wizard palmtop
users, the PCs will include built-in infrared support and a utility for
uploading and downloading data from the organizers, Sharp officials said.
The infrared utility will enable 8700 and 8900 users to quickly transfer
data to and from any Wizard organizer that's equipped with infrared.

RAM cards (OZ-780/781/782/783/784: (32 >>> 512K)
- Extra memory (almost all user memory)
- Back-up to RAM card feature
- Import data from older Wizards.
Application cards
- Supports most Wizard cards (not FAX card, Tetris card, or the
Organizer talk card for example).
- Places IC card keypad on display from existing IC cards
- Will support new OZ-9600II specific Wizard cards

9500/9520 DIFFERENCES FROM OZ-9600II MODELS

Hardware:
1. 1/2 screen size (pixels) but physically about 75% of the 9600II
(each pixel is larger and more widely spaced than the 9600 series).
This means larger characters (great for Terminal and OZ-8000/7000
series IC cards).
2. Slightly better contrast display (smaller display makes this possible)
3. Free stop hinge (can set screen at any angle).
4. No AC adaptor, only CE-76BC battery pack.

Major software differences:
1. FAX software built-in
2. No overlapping windows (Scrapbook, Calculator, etc.)

Minor software differences:
1. Slightly more user memory per model (10K more than 9600 series).
2. Pressing Calendar key always returns to monthly (or weekly if set default)
3. Touching Telephone key toggles between Tel1, Tel2, Tel3 (Same for UserFile
4. PageUp/PageDown feature available via Keyboard in most major apps
including DAILY view.
5. Better IR unit to unit feedback (it tells the receiver "Connected").
6. To Do Categories easier to access when viewing To Do lists (via dialog box
7. Pressing SEARCH then typing OVERWRITES any previous search word on display
8. Improved Menu navigation (Now multiple menus in menu bar, etc.)
9. Slightly faster screen updates (again, because of smaller screen).
10. HOME & END key commands to jump to the first/last Scrapbook entry.
11. More printer emulations including continuous feed printers.
12. Notebook supports the smaller font and the normal font (smaller font
is the same as the font in the OZ-9600's terminal mode or WEEKLY view)
13. When Wizard is turned ON and you press CALENDAR, it will go to *today*.
14. No 6 month Calendar, only a 3 month.
15. Cannot select a number in an application and then automatically bring
it into the CALC mode like you can on the 9600 (you can copy & paste however)
16. A number of even more minor changes.

Some features may be missing from this list.

Specifications and design are subject to change without notice.

with the home office and each other. Users can access
their Zaurus Mail in the office via infrared
technology or they can dial into the system from the
road. In addition, users can also instruct the Zaurus
Mail software on the PC to send important messages to
an optional PCMCIA pager card in the Zaurus.

- Schedule - allows entering, editing and viewing individually and in
the index mode scheduled items, as well as setting alarms.

DATABASE MANAGEMENT:
- To Do (with priority and up to 5 user-defined catagories) - allows
entering and editing ToDos. Each ToDo item can be either floating
all with a due date assigned and can have up to 5 categories
assigned. These categories allow for searching all ToDos by topic
(e.g. "phone calls", "meetings", project numbers, clients, etc.).
They also serve as filters in the index view, where one can sort all
ToDos by due date, priority, floating, done or by any of the
categories (can create a database of up to 32 categories, which can
be deleted, edited, etc.). All categories are available from a
pop-up menu for automatic entry.

number/extension) again with 5 customizable fields, useful if you
work extensively with a group of people from the same company
- Global search allows searching for a selected word (or phrase)
through the entire organizer or a selected mode. Each mode can also
be searched by the first letters of an entry (e.g. "Jo" for John) or
a typed keyword (e.g. "dentist).

NOTETAKING / WORD PROCESSING:
- Memo, with auto reformatting to avoid splitting words at the line end.
- Outline (great for storing permanent data, like account numbers,
passwords, measurements, gift ideas, etc. - one of the best features
can also be used as a database for all kinds of lists, formulas,
client info, etc. Special functions available from a pop-up menu
(expand/collapse family, expand/collapse all, full view/one line
view, combine topics, divide topics)

COMMUNICATIONS:
- Terminal mode (TTY) with a modem (has limited scripting ability, can
access Compuserve, allows for individual set-up of each dialing
directory entry)
- PC link
- printer connection
- unit to unit transfer
- cassette tape connection
- external AAA battery case

OTHER FEATURES:
- Calculator and paperless adding machine
- Calculate Data function for doing calculations in the Memo mode(e.g.
summarizing expenses, inventories, etc.)

and words.
- Time/Date Stamp.

SHORT-COMINGS:

to a new date).
- For TO DO, ANNIVERSARY, and PERIOD functions, you must type in the
dates (you can't "point" to them on a calendar)
- No index view for ANNIVERSARY and PERIOD functions
- SCHEDULE items cannot extend to the previous/following day
- Password displays as you type
- Too small for touch typing
- Does not have a true built-in expense function. However, there is a
facility in the "Memo" function to setup "calculated fields" which
can then be totaled automatically - this can serve as a low-level
expense function.

Yamani "bag" leather case, number KT820.
This was originally made for the 8000-series, but fit the 9600 quite well.
It had 12 pockets for IC cards, a bigger pocket to hold business cards
and the like, a large pocket behind the card pocket on one side, a pen
holder, and a small zippered pocket. Folded over like a book, with the
Wizard on the left with its own flap (with snap), and a strap (snaps) to hold
the whole thing closed. Came with a detachable wrist strap.
Price $99, but no longer available!!
