This week on NASAexplores we're featuring the articles, "<?xml:namespace prefix

= st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />America's Forgotten
Spacecraft," on the X-15, and "Glow-In-The-Dark Science," on photoluminescent
lighting. Below are abstracts of the articles, as well as brief descriptions
of the accompanying lessons for each grade level.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns

To access the articles and lessons, please visit the NASAexplores web site:

Topic 1: America's Forgotten Spacecraft
Long before the first launch of the Space Shuttle, NASA launched people into
space aboard another winged spaceplane: the X-15. This forgotten spacecraft
set records for speed and altitude.

K-4
Lesson 1 - The X-15: To use X-15 facts to solve addition and subtraction
problems.
Lesson 2 - Happy 45th, X-15! To create an anniversary card for the X-15.

5-8
Lesson 1 - Spacecraft Research Project: To research one of NASA's spacecraft,
and to create a presentation for the class about that spacecraft.
Lesson 2 - Rocket Thrust Bar Graphs: To create a bar graph to illustrate the
amounts of thrust created by different manned spacecraft throughout history.

9-12
Lesson 1 - Earn Your Astronaut Wings In The X-15: To determine the maximum
altitude attainable by a paper airplane.
Lesson 2 - Debate Over The X-15: To debate the claim that the X-15 is more of
a spacecraft than an aircraft.

Topic 2: Glow-In-The-Dark Science
You know that glow-in-the-dark material found in many toys? Something on that
same order has been developed by NASA and it can be infused into plastic and
vinyl. The glowing stuff is used for safety devices on the Space Station, and
as an emergency-lighting pathway on the Station in the event of power failure.
Not surprisingly, it's now being developed for use on Earth.

K-4
Lesson 1 - Open Wide: To learn how the iris works to protect the eye.
Lesson 2 - Rods And Cones: To learn the jobs of the rods and cones in the eye.

5-8
Lesson 1 - Way To Glow! To learn about three ways that light can be generated
using chemicals.
Lesson 2 - A Glowing Reaction: To observe chemiluminescence.

9-12
Lesson 1 - Exits That Photoluminesce: To label the exits in a building with
glow-in-the-dark signs.

Lesson 2 - Can You See In The Dark? To explore the dark adaptability of your
eyes to darkness.
