Assuming you are using Windows XP, add the line:
127.0.0.1 localhost
to the file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\etc\hosts

I looked at my hosts file and found that information. But then I recognized,
I put off the network cable. My NIC had no IP-Adress. When I connected it
again, everything was working. But why dose the NIC loose the IP-Adress wenn
the cable ist put off. I thougt I could learn PHP unconnected.

This is a Microsoft "improvement" that happens to violate the TCP/IP protocol.
It is formally called "media sense", and it can be disabled by a registry entry.

This has been covered many times here and in other news groups, so search for
the fix. It is easy to find.

About the same problem. Installed Apache carefully, but no answer at
http://localhost nor http://127.0.0.1. And I'm using windows ME.
Earlier I used phpdev, but after moving to broadband this only worked
after setting of the modem.
Thanks for any help,

Hi
The last attempt I did is I disabled my Mcafee antivirus went thru the steps of XAMPP, and when I tried to activate Apache I got
Error: Apache shut down unexpectedly. This may be due to a blocked port, missing dependencies, improper privileges, a crash, or a shutdown by another method Press the Logs button to view error logs and check the Windows Event Viewer for more clues If you need more help, copy and post this entire log window on the forums
Opened the httpdconfg file and changed the listen port number, and again Apache did not run. I watched many videos on Youtube, and I thing I failed to comprehend what changes were made through the command prompt. I will do my best in the next attempts to know the cmd prompt steps, In you tube videos they are not explained properly. Now I am making an improvement since mySQL,Tomcat,FilZilla, and Mercury are all running fine. My next challenge is to configure Apache and PHP which is not showing in XAMPP control panel
