I am using a Debian (squeeze/testing) system and I am trying to temporarily
remove my profile information from the iceape browser for the purposes of
software testing.

I went to my home directory and renamed the .mozilla directory to
.mozilla.old as follows:

cd
mv .mozilla .mozilla.old

I now restarted the browser, expecting to be asked to create a profile, but
instead I was taken to a blank page. Examining the bookmarks, I notice that
they are my old ones. I would have expected these to have been moved with
the profile. What is going on? Why do I still have residual data left in
the browser?

Mark.

Any time I wonder where stuff is stored I use grep to hunt through my
account for the data. Example for your case:

cd
grep -r part_of_bookedmark_url_here *
grep -r part_of_bookedmark_url_here .???*

Did you stop the browser before moving the .mozilla directory?
If not, maybe it saved its bookmarks in a new .mozilla. Or you could
start the browser with a command-line option to create a new profile.
Try --help to see what options are available.
