Hey! I am using Debian iceweasel, which is essentially a rebadged
version of Mozilla Firefox.

I was looking for some information on the internet, and for some reason
my browser suddenly switched to the following website:

http://antispyware-scanner5.com

I got a pop up window:

Your computer remains infected by threats! They might lead to data loss
and file structure damage, and needed to be heal as soon as possible.

Return to Personal Antivirus and download it secure to your PC

Interesting, I clicked cancel, and another window popped up
"Windows Security Alert" in the exact style of a Microsoft Windows XP
window, with the rounded frames, the blue borders, and a red cross in the
corner.

I didn't install any themes, so where is this window layout information
coming from? Is there a Windows XP theme built into the browser?

Also, why does the pop up window not have browser controls?

My Javascript settings do not allow scripts to disable or replace
context menus, so I thought that all browser windows must have controls
as a result of this.

Mark.

A obvious attempt to get you to install their spyware. Likely the popup
is an image or maybe a bit of Flash. It has nothing to do with themes.
Do you have popups disabled?
Do you have Flash disabled?

You might want to see about running the add in No Script

Wouldn't an image have window decorations and browser controls?

It has nothing to do with themes.

I'm not sure. I did not immediately see an option for this, but I will
investigate. I normally use iceape (mozilla-browser), which is a much
better browser. Unfortunately, it has disappeared from Debian at this
time.

I have noticed in the past that when popups are disabled, they still
occur on some websites. I'm not sure whether or not this is fixed in
mozilla firefox.

Flash is not installed at this time.

Right: about:config shows:

privacy.popups.policy default integer 1

I will set this to 2 and retry.

I have found another website. This one seems to be producing moving
boxes, again with the browser controls are missing.

Why don't the boxes have a titlebar, menu, and all of the other stuff
that a browser window has?

Sorry. Not really. I forgot to change the subject topic. The issue is
more general now.

Which Javascript facility is creating these boxes, and do we need an
option to disable it?

For example do we need an additional option dom.allow_scripts_to_create_boxes
on the browser?
