Subject: [GRAIL] And Now, The Moment You've All Been Waiting For...
From: Guido van Rossum <gu...@cnri.reston.va.us>
To: gr...@python.org, pytho...@python.org
Date: Tue, 16 Apr 1996 16:12:37 -0400

Grail 0.3b1 is ready to face the world.

Grail is an extensible Internet browser written in Python using the
Tkinter GUI toolkit. It supports plug-ins and applets written in
Python. It currently runs on most Unix systems; Mac and Windows ports
are in the works, depending on stable ports of Tk to those platforms
(and a lot of RAM).

This is a beta release -- we've been hacking the code till noon today
and there are likely to be a few minor bugs left, but overall it's a
big improvement over Grail 0.2, so we don't hesitate to recommend
Grail 0.3b1 as a replacement for it.

This is a beta release -- we do request your feedback. Send all
feedback to grail-f...@python.org. Or send it to the Grail
mailing list (gr...@python.org; to [un]subscribe, use
grail-...@python.org). DON'T POST GRAIL RELATED MESSAGE TO THE
COMP.LANG.PYTHON NEWSGROUP, PLEASE!

There's one snag: we haven't gotten the text for the relaxed license
yet that we promised earlier yet. Therefore, Grail 0.3b1 will be
distributed under the same (still rather liberal, as long as you don't
resell it) license. We continue to work with the lawyers to get the
relaxed license ready in time for the release of Grail 0.3 (and no, we
don't know when that will be but we expect it to be within a month).

And now, here's the URL you've all been waiting for:

http://monty.cnri.reston.va.us/grail/

This page also contains a list of what's new. It's too long to copy
here entirely, but here are some highlights:

tables
frame sets
preference panels
disk cache
better HTML parsing and rendering
better applet security
much improved printing (including images)
support of JPEG and other image formats (if you have netpbm)

And much, much more.

I'm posting this for Guido because of some problems with the local
news server.

No, it's not; I get 404 Not Found, as usual. The official homepage points
me to .../grail-0.2; that's not found, either. Ditto .../grail-0.3. Has
somebody made a typo somewhere?
