.xls attachments default to error "Exce.exe" instead of MS Office Excel

I use a Dell DT with MS XP, Office 2003 and have not had this problem
since I bought my computer 4 years ago. The default says "Notepad" ?!
even though when I go to Firefox Tools, Apps, Excel worksheets it
shows office excel default. The problem first occurred when I pasted
Excel info to a Notepad "txt" for ANSI encoding I have erased history,
cache, etc. but problem came back after one clean try. Sending Excel
xls. reports is 70% of my job and I am at a loss.
