learning about web and web programming

Salaam,
is there a guide for beginners for making web pages ( i know
the basic things, i want to know about more advanced web page
designing ) i've heard the name of CGI many times but i don't
know what it is. i want to know more about CGI and java
programming etc. where can i find a complete guide?

Pick up the classic old chesnut, "Laura Lemay's Learn HTML in 14 days" ...
then read "Creating Killer Websites" by David Siegel.

Those will answer all your questions...

DESIGN FAQ from usenet somewhere?

I haven't looked, and I wonder who might have looked and found already.

read Jakob Nielsen's columns on web usability, at
www.useit.com/alertbox.
