In general an imagemap request spawns a separate process on the server
machine, which figures out what response is required. For the same result
to take place with no server involved, all the imagemap code would have to
exist in the client as well, not to mention mechanisms for specifying
imagemap configuration files, etc.
In other words, your suspicion is correct, though it's not HTML that
doesn't support it, it's the existing clients.

Fortunately someone thought of a better way to redirect followups a
few millennia ago (Usenet time), it's called the Followups: lines.
See my header for an example.

I am in the midst of creating a demo home page as part of a presentation for
my company's executives to help them understand the kinds of things that are
possible using WWW. Part of the demo home page includes a map of the US. The
image map for the graphic was created using Mapedit. I am using both Netscape
1.1 and Spy's Air Mosaic as browsers during the demo. For the purposes of
doing a speedy demo we are running the browsers offline. All HTML files reside
on the local drive. The operating environment is MS Windows 3.1. We are not
using any server software, just the browser to display the HTML resources.
Under Netscape when I click on a location in the map under netscape I am moved
to a page that is simply a display of the contents of my 'map file. Under Air
Mosaic I get an error message telling me that it can't find the file.
I am suspicious that HTML does not support local image map files. Does anyone
have any ideas as to what I might be doing wrong? Or is my suspicion correct?
Best regards,
TJB
