REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
unmoderated group comp.infosystems.hyperg

A RFD (Request For Discussion) is a document that is posted to
news.announce.newgroups for helping people to decide wether to join a
proposed newsgroup or not.

RATIONALE:

This group is proposed for discussion of various aspects of the
Hyper-G information system. Hyper-G is a second-generation networked
hypermedia system which is now becoming increasingly popular. Although
there is a mailing list available for Hyper-G, many users prefer to
discuss their ideas and projects within a newsgroup. Also, a newsgroup
will be able to reach more and different people willing to take a part
in the evolution of Hyper-G.

Although Hyper-G is in many respects similar to the WWW and in fact
could be seen as a very powerful implementation of it, it is different
in many ways. It supports structured hypermedia, links in arbitrary
document types, a separate link database, integrated search
functionality, link consistency, authoring clients, multilinguality,
and much more. Therefore, we anticipate that the issues discussed will
be somewhat different from what is discussed in comp.infosystems.www.*
newsgroups, which - in our opinion - justifies a separate newsgroup.

Currently (August 1995), there are about 100 installations of Hyper-G
servers world-wide, the mailing list (hyp...@iicm.tu-graz.ac.at) has
about 340 members. More information on Hyper-G can be found under
http://hyperg.iicm.tu-graz.ac.at/Chyperg.

CHARTER: comp.infosystems.hyperg

The Hyper-G newsgroup will focus on:
- development of Hyper-G
- extensions to Hyper-G
- the relation between Hyper-G, Gopher and the WWW
- announcements of new software and sites
- information providing and authoring with Hyper-G
- structuring large amounts of data on the Web
- electronic publishing and hypermedia applications in general
- new ways for hypermedia user interaction and interfaces
(e.g. VR navigation and authoring tools)

END CHARTER.

PROCEDURE:

This message initiates a discussion period to consider the creation of
an unmoderated newsgroup comp.infosystems.hyperg. Discussion will take
place on news.groups. If discussions are made in other newsgroups,
they should always be cross-posted to news.groups.

*** This is NOT a call for votes ***

Please do not attempt to vote now. Barring significant disagreement, a
call for votes (CFV) will be issued approximately four weeks after this
RFD. When the CFV is posted, there will be instructions on how to mail
your votes to the independent vote counter.

DISTRIBUTION:

This RFD is in accordance with the Guidelines for Newsgroups Creation,
and has been cross-posted to the following relevant newsgroups:

news.announce.newgroups, news.groups, comp.infosystems,
comp.infosystems.www.misc, comp.infosystems.harvest,
comp.publish.electronic.developer

The RFD will also be posted to the Hyper-G mailing list:

I'd like to support the formation of this new group.

HyperG is a information system with great future potentional.
It will hopefully play a role in future projects on electronic publishing
and computer supported learning.

Matters of interest are now discussed on a mailing list maintained by the
IICM in Graz, the traffic on this list is considerable high. This list is
mostly used for the discussion of technical problems of HyperG.
Occasionaly, requests by interested people appear on the newsgroups related
to information systems (comp.infosystems.*, de.comm.infosystems) and have to
be directed into the right channels by a kind person.

Send E-MAIL (posts to a newsgroup are invalid) to:

hyper...@sub-rosa.com

Please do not assume that just replying to this message will work.
Check the address before you mail your vote. Your mail message
should contain one and only one of the following vote statements:

I vote YES on comp.infosystems.hyperg
I vote NO on comp.infosystems.hyperg

You may also vote ABSTAIN or CANCEL but these are not counted as valid
votes for the total count.

If your mail software does not indicate your real name, please also
include the following statement and add your name (on the same line).

IMPORTANT VOTING PROCEDURE NOTES:

Standard Guidelines for voting apply. One person, one vote. Votes
must be mailed directly from the voter to the votetaker. Anonymous,
forwarded or proxy votes are not valid. Votes mailed by WWW/HTML/CGI
forms are considered to be anonymous votes.

Vote counting is automated. Failure to follow these directions may
mean that your vote does not get counted. If you do not receive an
acknowledgment of your vote within three days contact the votetaker
about the problem. It's your responsibility to make sure your vote
is registered correctly. Duplicate votes are resolved in favor of
the most recent valid vote. Addresses and votes of all voters will
be published in the final voting results post.

The purpose of a Usenet vote is to determine the genuine interest of
persons who would read a proposed newsgroup. Soliciting votes from
disinterested parties defeats this purpose. Please do not distribute
this CFV. If you must, direct people to the official CFV as posted
to news.announce.newgroups. Distributing pre-marked or otherwise
edited copies of this CFV is generally considered to be vote fraud.
When in doubt, ask the votetaker.

* A copy received from the votetaker's automated mailserver
