Aside from the Veronica search and NOAA weather tools on floodgap.com
I find regular use for Gopherpedia (gopher://gopherpedia.com/7/lookup)
and Gopherddit (gopher://gopherddit.com/).

Would love to learn of other Gopher-based services.

Port70.de offers some gateways to read newspapers and weather
information.
Reading reddit is also possible.

There's a whole lot here (some seem broken though):
gopher://magical.fish

I had some fun with the Javascript (and registration) free gateway
to one of these new chatbot things here, but it seems to be broken
now:
gopher://gopher.flatline.ltd

The science paper search seems to hang now too, oh well. At least
Gopherpedia seems to have lasted the test of time because I use
that too.

No wait, it all depends on your client. It fails with the UMN
Gopher client, but the OpenAI interface works in Gopherus (not the
research paper search though):

"Query: what services are available on the Gopher protocol?

Response:

The Gopher protocol was a distributed document search and retrieval system that
was popular in the early days of the internet. It allowed users
to access a variety of services, including:

- Text-based search and retrieval of documents
- File transfer
- Remote login
- Newsgroups
- Gopher menus
- Gopher maps
- Gopher tunnels
- Gopher search engines
- Gopher-based chat rooms
- Gopher-based games
- Gopher

Query: what new Gopher services are available today?

Response:

Some of the new Gopher services available today include:

- Gopher-based search engines
- Gopher-based file sharing
- Gopher-based chat rooms
- Gopher-based forums
- Gopher-based newsgroups
- Gopher-based web hosting
- Gopher-based email services
- Gopher-based blogging platforms
- Gopher-based social networks
- Gopher-based online stores
"

So your typical load of unhelpful nonsense from that then.
Interesting that it insists twice that newsgroups are on Gopher.

Welcome to the NG. I mostly just read messages and not post but here
goes a few that i use. There are more but you get the idea:

gopher://worldofsolitaire.com/ - dozens of solitaire games to play, fun
gopher://home.quix.us/1/audio/otradio - list of old time radio programs
gopher://khzae.net/7/movies/postalcode - Get movie theater listings
gopher://raymii.org/1 Coder who has a good phlog. Used to host news.
gopher://telefisk.org/1/amiga - list of amiga and hardware guides
gopher://bitreich.org - bitreich.org
gopher://gopher.petergarner.net/1 - rpi4 gopher
gopher://gopher.metafilter.com/ - metafilter

That's good for now. Happy gopher hunting.

Hey Ben,

I was going to post your recipes db. But since you already did that, let
me just say thanks for putting it together, it's been useful to me!

If you'd like to read Gemini pages, but prefer to use a Gopher client or
are using a system that doesn't support TLS or have any Gemini clients,
try cosmarmot.space, a Gopher to Gemini gateway.

I created a gopher search engine: gopher://gopher.icu/1/quarry

There are several services listed in addition to the search
functionality:

* Gutenberg book search
* Podcast search
* Wikipedia search (gopherpedia)
* Youtube search
* Veronica II search
* Recipe search
* Directions search (google maps)

The first two are my own work, the others I have added for
convenience.

I also made a vote/polling system: gopher://gopher.icu/1/poll

Enjoy!

Thanks so much to everyone,
is there a wiki or someplace that we can keep all this gopher links?
will be nice to have them all together.

This gives me Yahoo Directory vibes. When Yahoo tried to list all
websites in categories and indexes. We see what happened to Yahoo, a
search engine approach might scale better.

I used to find DMOZ (now curlie.org) much more helpful than web
searches for this sort of thing. Unfortunately many categories
became unmaintained and thus increasingly incomplete, although I
see that the Gopher section has been touched this year:

In fact there's Phiki, a Wiki on Gopher. Nobody seems to use it
though.

I believe gopher lawn is an attempt at a community managed collection of
links much like DMOZ was for the web: gopher://bitreich.org/1/lawn

Does Curlie by any chance have an option to use the DMOZ theme? Or any
option to switch to a more usable theme based on cookies or a GET
parameter?

I've kind of seen it as less usable than DMOZ because of their choices
in the appearance, but maybe I should try to use it with a "text-mode"
browser on a terminal emulator.

I could also craft some userContent.css hacks for this in the
Gecko-based GUI browser. I've just noticed Curlie is setting foreground
colors but background remains unset, which for me is resulting in some
gray (one of their text colors) on gray (the default background I picked
in the browser). For people who prefer light text on dark background, it
might result in very unreadable or even invisible text (as Curlie also
uses black for text).

I have NOAA space weather reports and forecasts available here:

gopher://whitemesa.net/

These are useful for ham radio operators and shortwave listeners
to estimate the impact of solar activity on HF radio propagation.

rec.radio.* should be a good starting point. A few of those
newsgroups actually get NOAA reports posted there too.
