Sometime ago I've created Gopherddit, a simple gopher interface to
Reddit using a CGI script made in Python, which can be accessed here:

Do I give up too much if I say that your idea of Usenet to gopher that was
dicussed /elsewhere would be very very nice thingie!

You have a great tool and I use it routinely.

My other favorite is gopherpedia.

I'm considering this at the moment and thinking about what would be the
best approach. :)

Thank you!

I've implemented it last year in early March, exactly one year ago and
just let it running, not expecting much traffic. However, the other day
I checked the server and I'm getting something like 250 to 650 selector
hits per day, with around 30 unique daily visitors. I was positively
surprised and I might even move it to a better server if needed.

Gopherpedia and HNGopher are among my favourites as well. In fact,
HNGopher inspired me to create Gopherddit.

I didn't know about HNGopher until now. It is similar to txtn.ws, which
I sorely miss.

pondering renewing the domain.

I use gopherddit on a regular basis. I like being able to get
the information from interesting threads while avoiding the
upvote/downvote culture.

Yeah, I feel the same. I do find that Reddit could be a spiritual
successor to Usenet, but without that and the toxicity of many subs.

Reddit is a moderated beast, where subs often rely on the availability
and good will of one or a few persons. Besides, reddit is a commercial,
by-design centralized entity. I fail to see any amount of "usenet
spirit" there.

Yes, moderation and general behaviour is what I meant with toxicity. On
that regard is has zero resemblance.

However, if you think conceptually and ignoring the obvious technical
differences, there is some communality:

- Categorisation of different interests into separate areas
- Centralised way to access different forums (from a user perspective)
- Subscription of individual forums of interest
- Threaded discussions
- Where most people are discussing in this way (used to be Usenet)

With reddit, censorship is being mistaken for moderation. I agree
trollish behavior is sophomoric and unfortunate. Silencing entire
communities due to political philosophy is symptomatic of problems FAR
worse than trolls.

Usenet is a breath of fresh air. I control who I filter and who not.
Otherwise, a moderated version of usenet is any other modern forum.

I could live without the spam. Though every medium has its pain points.

So you weren't going to renew the domain before?

Initially I thought it would get very little traffic. I was positively
surprised with the popularity it got and that made me decide to keep the
server up and running, as well as maintaining the code.

I'm still unsure about the domain though. It expires in about one month
and the renewing cost is about $20 at NameCheap. Not that it's a lot of
money, but at the same time, I think I should've gone for other TLD, to
have cheaper prices.

So right now I'm still considering whether to renew the domain or go
back to gopherddit.tk. The hole will remain online for sure though.

If you don't end up renewing the name, there are a lot of subdomain choices on
freedns.afraid.org, or if you like I can set you up a subdomain on gopher.is (I intend on
keeping this domain alive for some time).

Thank you!

However, I've already renewed the domain. Ended up costing $12 instead
of $20 after all. I agree, it's quite a nice domain for a cool tool, so
it's well worth keeping it.

Next year, if it gets much more expensive, I'll accept the donation and
maybe create some Paypal link to let anyone contribute.

By the way, I did not renew my personal domain, which was gluon.me. You
can see the new one down below on my signature.

I was wondering recently why it disappeared, it had a very specific
name, easy to remember. For next time: it would be cool if you could
simply leave some link on the old site with a note like "will disappear
soon, moved to newname.org" - that would be super helpful not only to
humans, but also to the indexing bots that spider the gopherspace. :)

Yes, I agree. I didn't do it because I was myself totally unaware about
the expiration until too late.

By the way, do you know the proper process to update it in bitreich's
gopher-lawn listing?

I've git cloned the repo and updated the domain, but is there some way
to git push it to the original repo? I can always git diff and send the
diff to __20h__ by email or something, but I was wondering if there was
a faster way.

That's usually how it goes, yes. You're not alone!

No idea, sorry - never looked into the gopher-lawn. I understand it's
some kind of DMOZ-like index for the gopherspace. Sounds interesting,
but my interest is limited to OGUP these days.
