The Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) announces its 2012-13 Programme for Working Professionals in Urban Development (PWP-UD): India’s first interdisciplinary, practice-based, full-time, certificate programme based out of its new Bangalore City campus.

Do you have the courage and sensitivity to join change makers, entrepreneurs and professionals in building a resurgent urban India?

The early 21st century is a period of dramatic change, punctuated by multiple shocks, the emergence of new technologies as well as social and global environmental challenges. As the balance of power, productivity and innovation - along with poverty and other environmental challenges – tilts towards Asia we urgently need to focus on such cities.
While Chinese cities have garnered immense attention, little is known and even less is understood of Indian urbanisation. India’s 375 million urban residents; 500 emerging cities and near trillion dollar urban economy is ‘managed’ by less than 35,000 people – 90 percent of whom have no formal training on urban development. They struggle each day to respond to collapsing infrastructure, antiquated governance systems, declining environmental sustainability and to assist over 125 million low-income residents whose working and living conditions are abysmal.

To the cynical and faint hearted, this is one of the most intractable problem sets in the world!
To many others, this is one of the most dramatic opportunities for change, innovation and enterprise in contemporary history.
Whom would you wish to stand up and be counted with?
The PWP-UD is for early and mid-career professionals from any disciplinary background with interest in South Asian urban development who wish to augment their capabilities and professional worth, add value to existing careers or future career tracks, and who wish to participate in this tremendous urban transformation.
A mix of domestic and international participants will be carefully chosen from the corporate, government, academic and civil society sectors, based on past performance, innovation and leadership potential. They may return to help transform their parent institutions; create new economic or social enterprises or find employment opportunities in some of India’s most innovative corporations, public, research and civil society agencies.
Participants will be mentored through a unique interdisciplinary curriculum by a faculty of international thought and practice leaders. Participants will be immersed in the challenging realities and opportunities of small town and metropolitan India and one South or Southeast Asian metropolis. They will develop new perspectives, learn to solve complex problems in teams and conduct an independent project to enhance their professional and social value, both in India and abroad. In short, prepare to help transform South Asia, and thereby in a big way - the rest of the world.
