We recently had a question about computing the mean center of several areas.
Well, what is the mean of several points on the surface of a (almost) sphere?
For instance a boundary condition: what is the mean of two points on the equator
180 degrees apart? In the center of the sphere? On the surface but 90 degrees
away (but in which direction?) ?
One supposes that GIS and spatial stats in general are more comfortable with
planes than spheres, but is this a real problem? Where does sphericity begin to
matter, and how does one tell?
