We are interested in using boundary files from the CIESIN archives
in our Arc/Info system. The files are in a format known as BNA,
described as "a generic ascii file structure". The way in which
the files can be used is by importing in the the DOS version 2.0
version of Atlas Graphics Import/Export product, then exporting from
Atlas grapics into an arc .e00 file.
We don't have access to Atlas Graphics or the Import/export program.
Has anyone else successfully dealt with this problem, ie how to get
BNA files into ARc info without using AG?
Thanks for any help

We have a Web site which does the conversion for you, at least for
county, census tract, blockgroup, and block geographies. See-
http://plue.sedac.ciesin.org/plue/ddcarto
For other geographies (e.g., MCDs, Places) you'll have to use Atlas IE
or special order it from us- email in...@ciesin.org.

Stephanie,
If you have some facility with AML, or any programming language, you
could write a little macro/program to convert the BNA file to one which
can be read into ArcInfo via the GENERATE command. The BNA format is,
if memory serves, fairly simple. If you have some AML experience a
program such as this should not be too dificult to put together. If you
have never ventured into AML this could be a good way to introduce
yourself.
If you are interested, and would like more specifics on this I would be
more than happy to help you.
In any event I do wish you and your colleagues all the best,
Paul
