Cartography has a big importance in the world of GIS. You present
the
output of your work in GIS in form of maps. Such maps must be
clear ,effective and
interactive to the audience whom you present to.
For example I spent 1 month in performing hydrological modelling of
certain area but if I end up making inaccurate or not visually
significant DEM,
my work gains no respect.

You can go for readings starting from wikipedia and enough
literature can be found
if you google. You can stick to the pages on "computer cartography "
which
acts as nuts and bolts of mordern GIS.
