I am doing robotics work, and am interested in determining the best map data
available using the new space shuttle radar mapping data. Is this DTED 4?
Our application is mobile robotics, and high fideity maps are needed. Any
help is appreciated.

164.214.2.59/geospatial/products/DTED/dted.html
looks promising. Google search: DTED Download

That link didn't work for me. Very good DTED maps are available at NIMA
http://www.nima.mil/ to everyone. However, at one time the higher resolution
maps were available for only official government use. I don't know if this
is still the case after reading the papers over the last few days.

The DTED data available at the public NIMA website is Level 0 data, with
elevation postings about every 1km. The DTED level 1 (3 arc second
intervals, 100m postings) and 2 (1 arc sec intervals, 10m) are
unclassified, but their distribution is still restricted to government
use. Higher resolution datasets are classified. If you have access to
the NIMA website on the SIPRNET (Classified internet) you can download
this data and most of NIMA's other products, as well as find out about
their classification levels.

The Shuttle radar data is being used to create a DTED Level 2 database,
and there is still a pretty large processing effort required
before that database is available.

David,

If you need some high quality geomatics software to process this data please
contact me at ped...@pcigeomatics.com . Feel free to browse our website at
www.pcigeomatics.com for more info...

John Naunheimer at PCI is an expert with Radar data and would be able to
assist you further with any questions you have..

Laurie McBean at PCI is an expert in DTM's & DEM's and digital
photogrammetry in general so she would be able to assist you on that front.
