Why are ring toplogy networks expensive over those of bus topology ?

Hi,

I have read that Ring topology networks are far expensive than
bus topology, wat is the reason behind this expense, is it the
adapters (are they harder to be manufactured), is it the maintanence
cost or is it something related to protocol implementation (i guess
not, is it ?) or is it related to patents on that technology.
