Info on telecommuting please?

Dear anyone,

My company is considering providing telecommuting access for it's
employees and we are trying to determine whether it is really a good
idea or not (personally I think it would be).

We are a telecommunications company, developing hardware and software,
the R&D department being the one currently looking into the
feasability of telecommuting for it's engineers.

If anyone works at a similar (ie R&D type) organisation (or even if
you have heard of one) which has tried allowing employees to work from
home for a portion of the week (or whatever), I would really
appreciate hearing from you. I would really like to know if anyone
has tried this out and how successful it was.
