HOME-ORIENTED INFORMATICS TELEMATICS and AUTOMATION
Dear Fellow Researchers
As you have previously indicated an interest in receiving news about the
research area Home Oriented Informatics, Telematics & Automation, I
call your attention and invite you to a new WWW-platform (HOMESTATION)
which a student and I have "designed" to constitute a new kind of
opportuity for an interaction taking form of continued, sedimenting and
outbranching structured dialogues. The general heading concerns long
term consumer interests in the future development and application of
domestic information and communiction technologies.
I am presently organizing this platform as a system of homepages
identified as http://www.psl.ku.dk/~oikos/.
The site is located at the University of Copenhagen, and the Internet
"HOIT-NET" is realized as part of research at the Psychological
Laboratory in connection with an experimental 1:1 scale model of a
multimediahome.
Whereas academic WWW sites still largely are used to spread information,
this one is also being designed for open threaded discussions, by the
use of a number of dialogue-platforms, each able to branch into a number
of parallel tracks of threaded discussion. These platforms are all
tentatively open for direct comments and suggestions. If such openness
leads to misuse, we will introduce a password system.
I hope you are able to visit the site, and that you will want to
contribute with identification of own resources, and very concretely:
with links of more than commercial interest.
It is not an online simultaneous conference, but more like a virtual
club,.where you can stop up, f.ex. once a week, once a forthnight or
once a month, and put in an argument or two in one or more dialogues, or
branch out a new dialogue about an unforeseen aspect or dimension or
opportunity or link, which we others might not be aware of.
We have established the provisional frames and some content of a new
electronic Journal: Oikos-e, Journal of Domesic Information Ecology, -
this is where some of the dialogues are generated, - and where you migt
want to publish.important papers.
But, of more immediate import is the stage we have arranged for
"preconferencing", relative to the HCC5 (Human Choice and Computers).
Conference i Geneva 26-28 August 1998.
The theme of that conference is "Computers and Networks in the age of
Globalisation" .
and the theme Home-Oriented Informatics & Telematics is among the first
5 topics suggested.
I have attached the second call for papers. Beware of the official
deadline for abstracts February 15th.

The TC9 Chairman has suggested, that we create a showroom in Geneva,
where experimental homes, model- and demonstration homes - real or
virtual - in various countries can present themselves to each other on
projection screens.Questions relating to "virtual home" are highly
relevant.
One dialogue platform on our web-site is established for discussion of
precisely this idea.
P.S.
You may wonder, why we are not using the usenet comp.home.misc group for
these purposes. The explanation is, that traffic on usenet is of such
volume, that many servers tends to discard messages more than a few
weeks old. This prevents the emergence of stabilizing thematic
structure, and looses relevant researcher-participants, who may visit
the net more infrequently.(But this call will go out on comp.home.misc)
If you are a researcher and do not have access to WWW, but wish to
contribute and participtae, write me an e-mail, and describe
background, research aims etc.
