Hi all,

I'm not sure this is the correct forum, but anyway...

I have some awning windows (open with a crank, sized 1'6" x 3') very high up
on a wall that provide ceiling ventilation. I can open and close them
standing on a small step ladder or chair, but was wondering if there is any
cost effective way to open and close them with a motor? Ideally, the motor
would be hooked to a thermostat so that the windows opened when the house
got hot, but this is not a requirement.

Are there any companies that make motors for opening and closing windows?
Has anyone ever tried to make one themselves?

Comp.home.automation is correct, not sure about the others.

These are definitely available. Andersen and other major window
manufacturers sell them, plus there are probably after-market vendors of
them. They are even available with thermostatic controls.

Be prepared for sticker shock, though.

The Smarthome suggestion was what I was looking for, but a bit pricey. If I
interpret correctly, it'll cost >$200 per window. Anyone know of any other
place to buy this system (apparently made by Win-trol, Inc)? Any ideas on a
DIY/homemade window opener. The chair or stepstool is sounding much
better:-(

I have sen a crank that can be turned by a pole. You use
the extension pole to reach up to the crank and manually
close/open.

A friend of mine bought a device for opening his glasshouse window
automatically when the temp got up and close on lower temp. Its purely
mechanical, probably a mercury activated thing or something. He said it
works well and didn't break the bank. If you would like me to chase it
further then reply to me by e-mail.

A long time ago when I used to stalk this NG, I recall a
discussion and plans for modifying a cordless screwdriver
and it's recharger base for just this purpose. I'm sure
the plans are still out there somewhere, perhaps in the
FAQ. Good luck.

Those seem to be used quite often in Greenhouses. I've seen Norm on 'The New
Yanky Workshop' use them on a few Greenhouses projects.
