A while back I saw a current sensing switch which you plug into the
wall, plug your appliance into, and which has contacts which close when
your appliance draws current. I can't find a unit like this anymore.
Anyone seen one lately?

Thanks.

Two thoughts:
1) Home Automation Systems has one
2) I built one with several coils of magnet wire around one wire of an
extension cord. It generated enough voltage to trip a microswitch. The
load device plugged into the cord, and the cord into the wall.

I am guessing that you are tripping a small relay not a microswitch.
How many turns of the magnet wire are you using and what are the
specs for the relay (or switch)... I want my shop vac to come on when
I turn on a power tool... craftsman had something like that at one
time but haven't seen it anywhere...

Well, maybe you would like to explain what "voltage tripping a
microswitch" actual means... smart-ass! Try to be creative/productive
with your comments! (That's if you still have "pea" brain to use!)

Sorry about the typo. Yes, it was a small relay. I thin it took 5-20
turns, I don't really remember. I built it to turn on my shop vac when my
Shopsmith turned on. I "tuned" the wire turn count based on the Shopsmith
and the relay. It worked really well, until I upgraded to a 240V Grizzly
dust collector. Now the dust collector is radio controlled (I put a Radio
Shack radio controlled 110V relay to control a 240V relay. That works
really well. The dust collector is plumbed throughout my shop and I carry
the radio control in my shop apron.
