They are basically PCs running Linux or Windows with Ethernet ports.
They promise boat-loads of features, but none that I don't have
or can't add to my PC.
They tout battery back-up, industrial construction, blah, blah, blah...
They're all hype, smoke and mirrors.
The utility companies should provide a black box with an ethernet port
that could be queried through my network, I'd consider that.

What's inherently wrong with that?

True. Then again, there's very little you couldn't add to your PC.
What people are paying for is software, support, and convenience.

else.
As a design practice I do not recommend using an existing server as
the Firewall. This is one of the points that makes me nervious with
RG's.

This is a point many have been making, unfortunately for us we are in
the vast minority (we're a very small group).

Secondly, when everyone jumped off the Windoze bridge, I stayed
on the bridge. Minority or not, this sounds like the consumer
headaches we've all heard about regarding Windoze, or any closed
box system where third parties are discouraged.
