in discussing my plans for network wiring, a local
network wiring contractor suggested i use CAT5 enhanced,
rather than plain CAT5.

what's the difference between these two types of wire?

George:

Never heard of CAT5 Enhanced. I can tell you that we just had our huge
three story engineering center re-wired with CAT7! CAT7 is more commonly
found in Europe, I've been told. I can't even tell you what the difference
is... sorry.

I think Cat 7 is gigabit (1000Base T) Ethernet rated, Vs fast Ethernet (Cat
5) 100Base T, Vs (Cat 3) 10 Base T.

Cat 7 is intended for backbone applications, i.e. internet server networks
Vs desktop client / server applications.

I don't think that Cat7 technically exists yet. There are several
companies that are releasing products that they claim will pass
whatever the finalized standards are for Cat6/Cat7 ratings.

Cat5e does exist, and is generally a Cat5 cable with better NEXT/FEXT
ratings. Cat5e products should not be much more expensive than Cat5
products (if at all). I regularly substitute Cat5e products when the
Cat5 version is out of stock.

Cat 5 is rated for 100Mbps LAN traffic. Cat 5 Enhanced is rated for
350Mbps and is sometimes called "Cat 6" unofficially. You'll likely pay
3-4 cents/foot extra for it.If your house is small and you don't plan to
run much, go for it. But for a larger house I don't know that its worth
it. Are you REALLY ever going to NEED 350MBps in your house? I'll be
surprised if I ever use 100MBps equipment unless 10MBps stuff disappears
someday!

thanks for the replys.

the difference in cost in my situation is pretty small,
so i'm going to go with CAT5 enhanced, for possible
future use.

Hi,

This document lists the differences between Cat5 and Cat5e...

http://www.belden.com/products/7811anp.htm

that document says the cable is still 100MHz cable...

Just FYI...
