If you can program, Symbol Technologies, has a bar code scanner that fits
the Springport slot of a Visor. CASLSoft has a VB-like visual programming
system for the Palm OS (and other handhelds) that makes programming it
fairly simple. Even a beginner can probably have an app up and running in a
day or two. You can easily transfer the list to a PC for printing or just
carry the Visor (and scanner) with you. Being disabled, I cannot go to the
store. I e-mail my list to my son who puts it into his Visor before going to
the supermarket.
If you cannot program, Symbol also has some consumer oriented keychain
barcode scanners that will do what you want except they cannot print out a
list.

Not sure if you can still get them, but they probably sell pretty cheaply on
eBay.

I haven't done anything with them at home, but I have extensive experience
working with them at work, as one of my duties is programming cash
registers.
