I have very simple needs as far as my X-10 control is concerned. I have a
few outside lights that I like to have come on around dusk and go off about
bedtime and a couple of inside lights that do similar things.

I was happy with IBM Home Director until I got WinXP and HD broke.
ActiveHome doesn't seem to work any better at all with the new O/S. And
I'm not about to put out the kind of money that even Ocelot is asking, much
less the $800 and up for other solutions that give me more than I could
ever use.

So, being a programmer type, I started building a small library of very
simple Perl routines combined with some creative use of the XP schedular
and I'm starting to get the basic functionality back into the home. At
least it's not pitch black when I get home any more!

I'm sending commands to my CM11A using ControlX10::CM11 which is working
just fine. I was wondering if there are any others out there that are
working on similar simple projects and would be interested in sharing
experiences. I can set up a list on my private list server if there are a
few people who would like to join into a discussion.

I respect your progress and enthusiasm, but I havta add my perspective:

I played with a number of FORTH routines and got a number of WORDS
defined which performed the actions I wanted. I used the Model 1132
POWERLINC module and Model 1132S Powerline Serial Interface Adapter to
communicate real-time commands. Way more trouble than it was worth
compared to the value of HomeSeer for example. It was worthwhile in
terms of getting a grasp of the protocol innards, but not worth the
effort for a full-blown situation. I advise you to buy a commercial
control version like Homeseer unless you are sure your application will
be absolutely minimum. But then I usta write code all day long and dug
it...you're mileage may vary....I'm older now.

How about http://www.autom8it.com for a free solution for XP? Not used it
myself but it looks OK.

Homeseer has a free module that provides an interface to X-10, for
either a CM17A or CM11A. They are ActiveX controls, so they're easy
to use.

Hi Bill,

I'll be the second person here to mention MisterHouse.
(misterhouse.sourceforge.net)

If you like perl, then it's totally for you. there's still development
work to be done (done some myself) and it's a very comprehensive system
already. Also due to being written in Perl, it's totally portable too :)

Can't rate it highly enough!

-Cheers Max

Make me the 3rd and what he said goes double for me! Mr. House is
probably one of the most programmable HA systems available. I've also
played with Homeseer but my P90 was not up to the challenge (I was
playing with it under Windows not Linux). My Mr. House is used under
Linux.

Me too! I'm 57 and still pushing bits ...

I'll take a look at some of the suggested solutions here.
