I now have about 10 different remotes, mostly IR, but two RF for my two
DSS receivers. Does anyone out there know of a universal remote that
does both IR and RF, is programmable, can command up to at least 6
devices, and might even learn from other remotes?

check out www.smarthome.com They have all kinds of neat stuff including,
I think, at least one learning remote with IR & RF. But only the IR is
programmable (how would you teach it RF?!) I went with the Pronto, since
my 4dtv sends out RF and IR simultaneously, I could teach the Pronto the IR
version.
Also, check out www.remotecentral.com they cover almost every learning
remote out there.
good luck

I'm afraid I'm not aware of any universal remote that do IR *and* RF. There
are "pre-programmed" models that come with the DSS receivers, and some that
do IR & RF X-10, but no third-party models that can control RF & IR. Now,
one thing to check is that many DSS receivers can work with both IR & RF;
many come by default in RF mode. You may wish to contact the manufacturer.

I think Dancraft makes an IR i/o that is Mac compatible. Aside from that, I
know that a few of the All For One brand remote controls have standard
serial ports. I would guess that someone over in comp.sys.mac.comm may have
a driver for them.

Good luck,

An other option is using a IR to RF converter. This is what I'm using so that
I can use my Learning IR remote (Sony AV2000) to control my X-10 appliances.

Thank you all for the responses. Daniel, I read your reviews of the Sony
AV2000, Philips, and Harmon/Kardon models. Nice work, and very helpful!

Also, thanks for pointing out the fact that my DSS probably handles IR as well -
indeed, it does. (I have two of RCA's top of the line receivers.) I will
probably buy the Sony model, although I wish I could justify popping for the
$400 Philips or Harmon/Kardon models. I like the idea of customizing via a PC
and full-sized keyboard, vs. balancing a remote or two and manuals on my lap.

Although it's not a huge savings over $400, we have the Take Control
remote for $296.

Also, the Universal Remote SL9000 (at $92) is a strong contender in
the single-solution remote control arena...

forget RF, and get the pronto, and an IR repeater if you really need to control
from other rooms.

if you need X10, get the IR controller for 30 bux.
