I would like to find a Home Alarm system that can run autonomously,
but that can also interface with my PC. I would like to be able to
get status from the alarm, log events (like arm, disarm, alarm, etc.)
as well as arm and disarm the system.

Can anyone provide pointers to systems or manufacturers that provide
these capabilities?

Thanks,

I have several models in my web store which can do this. The Napco Gemini is
well supported and easy to install. Initial programming is a pain so I usually
do that for my clients by modem after the installation is finished. Another
good entrant is the Caddx NetworX series. I have full specs on both of these
lines in my store. The URL is in my tag line below.

Check out Home Automation Inc (HAI) website at their Omni/OmniPro/OmniLT
series. These units can have one or two serial ports (work with RS232 or
RS485),
have two (2) serial protocols called OmniLink and ProLink. There are already

PC access programs available via DOS or Windows to communicate with
their panels which allow you to download updated program(s) and/or
configuration
data, upload a complete dump of the panel contents, obtain the latest
status,
control security, HVAC, X10 home automation and much more. These units also
have remote phone control via telephone already "built-in". There is also
a Web-accessable software package called Web-Link that allows you to monitor

and control their panels via the Internet.

If you're a do-it-yourselfer, have a look at:

http://www.hometoys.com/htinews/oct99/articles/lavoie/lavoie.htm

I've just finished building it and it works great. I've had pretty much all
the problems you can encounter building it (this is what happens when a
software guy starts playing with hardware) so if you decide to build one and
have problems, contact me before bugging Guy.

Have fun!

Omni Pro is a nice unit for this type of installation. Just finished
installing one and am interfacing to HAL2000. Fairly easy install.

I install the APEX Destiny 6100. It offers interface to computer
through the RS232 port. It is software programmable as well. It
supports home automation using X-10. The best feature is the voice
status, which speaks: "Front Door Open", etc. It is very user
friendly. Contact me if you have any other questions.

The only problem with the Destiny according to my installer is
that I can't have the software, only the installer can have the
software. If I need any changes I have to call him to make the
changes. After the contract expires I'm planing to cancel and install
a new system.

The Omni Pro works great. Security as well as X10. The software also
interfaces to the HAL2000 voice recognition product.

I was thinking of buying the Omni Pro. Any additional suggestions or
success stories with the Omni please post.
