I have one of these seimens 2.4 gig cordless phones and would like to
increase the range. Any Ideas? external ant, amp??
I also have noticed a slight hum way in the background and was
wondering if this is normal. It is almost unnoticeable, but there just
the same.

I do not think an external antenna would be practical because of the
frequency the phone operates on. At 2.4 gigahertz, unless you used a
hardline type feedline to connect the antenna (around $3 per foot and
very large) you would have so much signal loss in the cable that there
would be no signal by the time it reached the antenna.

One thing to watch for is the Gigaset Repeater that is available now
in Europe. It will over double the present range of the phone without
an antenna. You can read about it here
http://www.siemens.com/ic/products/cd/english/index/products/cordless/repeater.html

I too have noticed the slight hum in the background of the phone
sometimes. It sounds like a power supply hum. It is only noticeable
when there is dead silence.

I have also noticed the hum. I've returned two units, but all of them have
it to varying degrees.

One thing that I notice is that the answering machine does not record caller
ID information. That is, when playing back a message, the display always
says "unavailable" even though the caller ID log has the info.

Anyone else notice this?

Thanks,

Hi Rob,
Looks like you had better return that one too. Mine does
display the Caller ID information when playing back a message. You may
have some of the options turned off though. I have talked to customer
service before and they seem to be very helpful. You can call them
toll free at 1-877-267-3373.
I have noticed that the hum problem and range can be improved by
"deregistering" the moble sets and doing a 30 second power down of the
base station with caller ID information turned off. This resets the
software, and with the Caller ID turned off, the maximum amount of
free memory is reset.
All and all this is the best cordless I have owned. Very pleased
with the features, especially the ability to talk from one handset to
another offline.

One way to increase the range is to add another base station in another
location of your home. You can register your cordless handsets with both
base stations so you can use any handset on any either base station. This
will effectively increase the range because you would be dividing you home
up into cells.

Since you probably don't need the voice mail function in the second base
station, you can use the Siemens 2402 base station instead of the 2420 (the
one you have now). The 2402 is the same as the desk station you have but it
doesn't have the voice mail or the desk station phone. We offer this
relatively new Siemens Gigaset model on our web site at:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/rciautomation/p31.htm

This may be a good time to buy a Siemens Gigaset because Siemens is offering
a rebate through the end of June 1999. See our web site for details.

For people looking for an extended range cordless phone system, there is a
new product with a range of 5 1/2 miles in open terrain, or in excess of 11
floors in an office building. The product is similar to the Siemens Gigaset
in that you can register up to 9 cordless handsets with each base station.
One other nice feature of this system is that the handsets will also
function as digital, full duplex 2-way radios, even when they are outside
the range of the base station.

We have pictures and all the features and specifications on our web site at:

I had the same problem, and after 1.5 hours on the phone with tech
support they had me reload factory defaults. This did fix it, for a
while. I noticed a few days later that it was not working again.
This time I reset it, and tested making programing changes one at a
time. As soon as I assigned Fax/Alerting the problem came back, and
when I removed it, it worked again. This looks to be a bonified
Gigaset Bug.

I assume you also have distinctive ringing. I hope this
helps.

Hi Dave, What problem did turning off the fax/alerting solve? Was it
the hum problem or the caller Id problem?
Does your phone hum?

It fixed my caller ID problem.
My phone does not hum, But I do pick up some hum on the headset. If
I move the cord around it can be minimized. It seems to be getting
picked up from the antenna area.
