Hi all,

I'm new to home automation. I found mister house
(http://misterhouse.sourceforge.net/) page the other day, and thought it
was really interesting.

I have a few questions:

1. is x10 active home kit the best way to go given my situation?
2. is x10 secure for home automation? I just want to make sure nobody
except me can control my lights, etc.
3. Where is the best place to shop for x10 devices in canada (other than
www.x10.com)?

Thanks.
wk.

It's relatively inexpensive and works well for most people and most
simple lighting situations.

This could be a problem. A house blocker will keep your neighbors'
x10 systems from affecting you, but if you have any exterior
receptacles, there's nothing to prevent a stranger from plugging in
and controlling your lights from the outside. And of course anyone
else inside your house can do the same thing.

And if you use any x10 RF receivers your security would only be provided by
the limited performance of most transmitters. But someone just outside your
house could play with your lights.

Or using a wired controller plugged in outside (or even outside a
neighbor's house).

Not to chase you away from this newsgroup but also check out
Misterhouse's mail list. It's a busy list but the info is very
useful.

I'm afraid I don't have enough info to know what your situation is. As
others have pointed out it's cheap and mostly reliable. Good for
experimenting.

X10 is not secure, you can make it more secure but it will never be
secure.
