I am going out this weekend to buy a Sony Rear projection TV. While I
was out looking at them I found out about the sony S-Link. How ever
the sales guy did not know anything about it. Does anay one have any
experiance / info on it. I would be very interested in finding out if
it gives me control of my equiptment. If it just is the equivilent of
hardwiring the IR remote then it is not of value.

Please Respond here as my address is not a marketing toy!

Thanks
-Burt

Well, I own a Sony S-link compatible VCR, TV, receiver, and CD player, and
am considering the cassette deck as well. It's got some nice advantages as
far as convenience of operation, it's not just a hard-wired remote per say.
For instance, when I put a rented movie into the VCR it automatically
turns on and informs the TV (via the S-link) to turn on as well and switch
to video #1 as its input source. The TV is configured for sound to go to
the receiver, so it tells the receiver to turn on and switch to the TV as
it's input source. This helps to keep us from doing the "remote shuffle"
as we can also work all functions with the single universal remote supplied
with the receiver.

I believe someone said here that if you had the tape deck, s-link could be
used to automatically pre-scan a CD to be taped and automatically set the
volume level on the tape deck.

One warning, be prepared, the documentation on S-link really stinks.

I would tend to agree.... I've never gotten a straight answer on S-link
from a dealer (OK... so I've only asked 2)

Do you need a special cable? I had started looking into this a year ago
when I got a new Sony TV.... the TV has 1/8" mini jacks on it, while my CD
player and receiver have a multi-pin plug (don't know the name.... I`ve
seen it many times in electronics, sorta similar to a molex connector),
and I can't remember which one is on my laser disc.... how do these all
interconnect?

I've never done much about it since I have a fairly nice remote system
where I can create IR macros to do what the S link should do
automatically.

I am looking for info on how to tie my PC into this S-LINK. When I
stick a Tape into the VCR I want the TV to switch to VCR in , the AMP
to switch to VCR and (heres the cool part) the ceiling lights dim to
about 40% (via X-10).

When I put in a CD I want the AMP to switch to CD and the whole house
speaker system to come on (also via pc/X-10).

The REALLY cool part is when the Driveway vehicle detector senses a
car the PIP will switch to the Driveway camera.

So far I have all of the parts in place / working except the control
of the TV. I REALLY need info on the S-LINK protocol.

BTW most of this can be done VIA sending IR codes from the pc but it
does not work well / reliable.

Thanks

Please respond here.
I am sorry but my address is not a marketing toy.

Yes, you do need an additional cable (not all that special) which has a
male 1/8" stereo connector on the end. Each S-link compatible device comes
with it, but it could easily be purchased anywhere. I think the interface
jacks are marked "control S" or "control A", but it's been a while since I
set mine up.

One thing in Sony's favor is their customer response center; I called on a
Sunday afternoon with a problem, got someone immediately, and she knew what
my problem was and how to solve it right away.

Do you have a phone number? I can't find one in any of my Sony
documentation.

Thanks!
