Hi. I want to get a good pair of coax crimpers for dual shield RG6 work. I
will be using the hex connectors. I'm confused, though, because Radio Shack
has a pair with a wide hex opening that costs $15. And Home Depot, which
usually has good tool prices, has a top-of-the-line one, made by IDEAL, for
$55.

I've already bought one cheap pair that I regret, so part of me thinks I
should avoid the Radio Shack ones on price alone. Then again, they seem
good, with nice hinges.

Can anyone guide me on this? Or personal recommendations of either of
these products?

Go with the side of you that knows the kind of quality you get at RatShak
for $15. Most good tools are not cheap. Most cheap tools are not good.
Did you ever notice how almost nothing sold by RatShak is used by RatShak.
:)

Radio Shack will probably do for hex crimping. They're just a little wobbly
and don't do as consistent a crimp. But why not treat yourself to the stuff the
satellite guys (and the better cable TV guys) use - Snap-N-Seal:

Second that vote. The Rat Shack hex crimper works for typical homeowner
use but won't hold up in commercial use. But the first time I used a
Snap-N-Seal connector I realized that I never wanted to do another hex
crimp.

Ain't that the truth. I use Digicon myself, and can't even imagine the
nightmare of hex again.

Like others have said, forget hex crimpers and go with Snap 'n Seal.
You'll never touch a hex again. You can usually find them on eBay or
just buy from http://www.starkelectronic.com/augat.htm who has good
pricing.
BTW, here's a handy tool for putting the connector on the end of the
cable without tearing up your fingers. I love this little doodad:

spent!

Actually the $15 crimper (item # 15-238) works pretty well. I use it often
and it hasnt failed me.

On the other hand, the stripping tool that radshack sells sucks.

Oh, yes! It goes so fast and they have the connectors for a fairly good
price too.

Definitely get a tool to put the connector on too. I got one from
Worthington that has a screwdriver handle and a thing in the end that
stretches the jacket and makes the connector go on much easier.

364346-01 Coax Flaring and Insertion Tool. Also about $12 for this one

Go ahead and get the Radio Shack Tool, when it breaks on the 2nd
connector you can go back and get the correct tool at Home Depot….

The Snap and Seal is a neat new design if you are going to be doing a
lot of these it will save you a lot of headaches.
